BeachBoard Update - July 5, 2012

In order to optimize BeachBoard to its full potential, it will be updated from 9.1 to version 9.4 on July 5, 2012.

New features include:

NEWS

  • Users will be able to subscribe to News.  Notification can be sent to email, SMS (text msg), and RSS (news feeds).
  • News items that have already been read may be dismissed by users in the News widget or on a mobile device.
  • A consolidated list of News items from all user courses is now available sorted from newest to oldest.
  • News items created by instructors may be saved as a draft or published, and also as a scheduled News item.

MEDIA SUPPORT

    • Expanded capabilities of "Insert Stuff" tool including the recording of one minute audio files directly in Dropbox, discussions, news and ePortfolio (requires Flash 10.1 or later).
    • "Insert Stuff" tool now available in the Basic Editing toolbar as well as Advanced.
    • Ability to search for YouTube links from the "Insert Stuff" button.

D2L MOBILE WEB

    • Discussion board participation is now included in the mobile version.
    • iPad app available for Dropbox called Assignment Grader.

DROPBOX

    • "Leave Feedback" interface has be redesigned with a new page layout allowing users to view documents in their browser without having to download them and to provide grade feedback in the same location.

    • Rubrics may now be easily added to Dropbox folders for grading.
    • Rubrics are displayed on the “Leave Feedback” page for instructors to fill out when grading as well as enhancements to be able to populate information sent to gradebook.

    • Users can subscribe to receive email or SMS notification with approaching end (due) dates.
    • Instructors can record audio feedback and attach it Leave Feedback.
    • iPad App called Assignment Grader available.

    GRADES

      • Automation of grades and comments from rubrics to gradebook.
      • Availability for distributed points within weighted grade selection.
      • Assessment rubrics available to students prior to completion of assignment.
      • Ability to grade one question at a time for all students.  This allows instructor to focus on one short or long answer question for all students during the same sitting for additional consistency.
      • Blind marking - an option designed to help remove bias when grading.
      • New weighted gradebook category provides for distributing weights by points across all items in a category automatically.

COURSE CONTENT

    • Users can subscribe to receive a daily activity summary (Dropbox, Discussions, Quizzes) for each course via email.
    • Ability to associate content items with learning objectives through new Objectives tab in Manage Content (or course builder).

QUIZZES

    • Question library has the “Go” button replaced by “Create New” button.
    • Ability to align specific quiz questions within a quiz to learning objectives as well as consolidate scores on a number of questions that measure a particular learning objective.

RUBRICS

    • Rubrics can be linked directly to Dropbox, Quizzes, Grades and Discussions from the folder’s Properties tab.
    • Points from a rubric may be easily transferred to gradebook with "Transfer Score" button.

CALENDAR/SCHEDULE/CONTENT

    • Schedule tool is now called Calendar.
    • Ability to create events for content and schedule within the Calendar tool.
    • iCal synching is enabled to sync D2L course events with Outlook, Google calendar, and virtually all mobile devices.
    • Calendar may now be used as presentation tool for course content in a daily, weekly, and monthly schedule.
    • Agenda view is expanded from 14 days to 21 days.
    • Exporting of calendar events into .csv files is no longer supported.

DISCUSSIONS

    • Discussion board postings now will display in a “Breadcrumb” format for easier navigation.

ONLINE ROOMS

    •  When the Online Room is created by the instructor, the correct time zone (Pacific) will be displayed and will provide immediate access for the students and instructor to the room (if needed).

COURSE ADMINISTRATION

    • Ability to identify students who have not logged on with new intelligent agent triggers.

    • An Objectives tab replaces the Activities tab for quizzes, Dropbox, discussions, surveys and grades, with three levels of association: association only, with evaluation and with goal management.
    • “Back to” links now available in content, discussions, and question library.
    • Printing of items such as course syllabus or events is now enabled.
    • Ability for students to receive notifications of course news changes now include: email, SMS, and RSS feeds including such items as Dropbox deadline reminders and a daily activity summary for each course they are enrolled in.
    • Users may add links to their profile from Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin, and Google+.

ePORTFOLIO

    • ePortfolio has been streamlined by combining all artifacts, reflections, presentations, and collections into one list which provides users the ability to sort, search, and filter items.
    • “New” and “Upload” buttons have been added for faster navigation.
    • The new ePortfolio now supports the use and re-use of forms, and allows users to import and export them.
    • Public presentations created in D2L ePortfolio may now be “liked” on Facebook, “tweeted” on Twitter and “recommended” on Google+.
    • Administrators and instructors can now push artifacts, presentations, reflections and collections into other users’ portfolios for their own use.
    • Permission Profiles is now known as Sharing Groups.
    • New Template packages have been made available from the learning repository including, career eportfolios, learning plans, seeded reflections.
