BeachBoard Known Browser Issues/Solutions

Mixed Content Blocking and Browser Changes for Secure Pages

As web browsers update their security they are now blocking mixed content on webpages.

What is being impacted on BeachBoard:

  • Embedded media might not play in Content; accessing the same video from the Links section works
  • Link Content topic might not load
  • Custom widget might not load
  • Embedded YouTube, Vimeo, SlideShare, etc.. widget might not load
  • Custom Navbar link to an external site does not load

Which browser versions are now blocking mixed content?

These browsers are known to block non-SSL content from within SSL websites:

  • Firefox 23
  • Internet Explorer 10
  • Chrome 30 (beta)
  • Other browsers may be implementing this security feature in future as well, however Safari is currently not blocking mixed content

Most browsers are using a shield icon in (or near) the address bar to indicate when mixed content has been blocked. You can see this in the Firefox screenshot above.

You may have to reload the page or the browser for the change to take effect.

Equation Editor in BeachBoard using Firefox on a Macintosh

There is a known issue in which the Equation Editor interface will not work properly in BeachBoard when using Firefox on a Macintosh computer. This is the only scenario in which we recommend that Mac users use an alternative browser such as Safari for accessing BeachBoard.

Internet Explorer

Internet Explorer 8 - "Navigation to the webpage was canceled."

Some content in BeachBoard will be linked from other sites on the web, such as when instructors embed YouTube videos in their courses. Internet Explorer will prompt you to allow this outside content to be displayed when you first encounter it.

A pop-up will state: "Do you want to view only the webpage content that was delivered securely?" To view the outside content, you must select "No."

If you unintentionally pressed "Yes" in response to that prompt, you can change the setting in the Internet Options.

  1. Click on the Tools menu item from the menu bar in Internet Explorer 9.
  2. Choose Internet Options from the menu.
  3. Choose the Security tab.
  4. Click on the Custom Level button towards the bottom of the Security tab.
  5. In the Security Settings - Internet Zone box, scroll down about halfway to the options for "Display mixed content" and select "Enable."
  6. Click OK, confirm the change when prompted, and click OK again to close the Internet Options box.

You may have to reload the page or the browser for the change to take effect.

Some users of Internet Explorer 8 and 9 have reported issues in BeachBoard when importing grades. It is recommended to use the Firefox web browser.

Internet Explorer 9 - "Only secure content is displayed."

When outside content is present on secure pages while using Internet Explorer 9, a pop-up will appear at the bottom of the screen that states, "Only secure content is displayed." To enable the content on a one-time basis, choose the option, "Show all content."

To always display this content, you can change the setting in the Internet Options.

  1. Click on the Tools menu item from the menu bar in Internet Explorer 8.

Internet Explorer 9 and above Compatibility View

Internet Explorer 9 and above isn't fully compatible with the current version of BeachBoard. 2. Choose Compatibility View Settings from the menu.
  3. In the Compatibility View Settings window, type "bbcsulb.desire2learn.com" in the "Add this website:" field and click "Add."

The website address should then appear in the box below with the label, "Websites you've added to Compatibility View."

Some users of Internet Explorer 8 and 9 have reported issues in BeachBoard when importing grades. It is recommended to use the Firefox web browser.

Internet Explorer 10

Some users of Internet Explorer 10 have reported issues in BeachBoard when creating, saving, and importing grade items. It is recommended to use the Firefox web browser.

Google Chrome

Some users of Google Chrome have reported issues in BeachBoard, including problems while taking quizzes, exporting grades and downloading .docx files from the Content area. If you encounter issues, it is recommended that you try a different browser.

Safari

Turn Off the Pop-Up Blocker

Safari doesn't natively allow you choose which sites to block pop-ups on. It only features on or off settings. It is recommended that you turn off your popup blocker while using Safari to access BeachBoard and turn it back on when you are done accessing BeachBoard.

1. Click on the Safari menu item from the menu bar at the top of the screen.

2. Click on the checked "Block Pop-Up Windows" option to turn off the pop-up blocker. If there is no checkmark to the left of the "Block Pop-Up Windows" option, then your pop-up blocker is already turned off.

Repeat these steps to turn the pop-up blocker back on after you are done accessing BeachBoard.
