Student Projects
In 2002, students became concerned about
the abundance of styrofoam used at CSULB. In Women's Studies
424, Women and Environmental Justice: Ecofeminism, they began
to research the effects of polystyrene, the main ingredient
in styrofoam, on the environment and on the human body. The information
they discovered and what they did about it was posted to a
Web
site designed specifically to alert others to the danger of
styrofoam and to suggest possible actions. It is a demonstration
of feminist
praxis.
In 1999, the students from Women's Studies
424, Women and Environmental Justice: Ecofeminism, traveled to
Ward Valley as guests of the
five Indian tribes living along the Colorado River. The State
of California was considering turning the area into a nuclear and
toxic dump. One year earlier, a camp had been established
on the land in
concert with activists who worked to convince the state
legislature to look elsewhere for dumping. Women Studies students
joined others in the desert for four days of camping, ritual,
story-telling
and
solidarity. Ward Valley was saved.
