Cal Rep's Exciting 2006-2007 Season

California Repertory’s exciting 2006-2007 season provides an examination of power and oppression, passion and the consequences of betrayal, and the ongoing struggles of men and women for mutual respect and compassion.

Opening the season is The Cannibals, George Tabori's provocative holocaust play. In this shattering act of memory, Tabori, a Hungarian Jew and refugee from Hitler's Berlin, reveals the conflict between physical and spiritual imperatives, daring us to face our own potential for savage behavior. The Cannibals will be directed by Cal Rep resident director, Anne Justine D’Zmura, and runs from September 15th through October 7th.

The second play of the season is a little-produced work by the famous Spanish poet and playwright, Federico García Lorca. In his 1928 play Don Perlimplin and His Love for Belissa in the Garden, Lorca examines of the darker sides of love. Moving from farce to tragedy, this deceptively simple play about marriage, betrayal, and death focuses on the playwright's obsession with the destructive power of passion. Don Perlimplin runs November 17 through December 16th and will be adapted and directed by guest artist, David Zinder.

Following Don Perlimplin, Cal Rep turns to Shakespeare and an exploration of one of English history’s most poignant father-son struggles. 445: Shakespeare’s Henry brings the lessons of leadership and war out of their historical context and into our own time in this deconstructed look at three of Shakespeare's greatest plays. Conceived and directed by guest artist Tom Cooke, 445: Shakespeare’s Henry runs February 20th through March 17th.

Closing out the season is Heather McDonald’s lyrical drama, Dream of a Common Language. Set in France in 1874, this revealing play smashes stereotypical gender roles in a search for female and artistic emancipation. McDonald examines a marriage between two painters as she seeks to evoke, in the words of Virginia Woolf, ‘the longing, for women as well as men, to have a fusion of passion and work in their lives.’ Dream of a Common Language runs May 11th through May 19th.

This season California Repertory Company performs at the Studio Theatre on the campus of CSULB.

All tickets for Cal Rep productions are $20 for general admission, $17 for students (with valid ID), and $15 for seniors (55 and older). For tickets call (562) 985-5526.
