When is the admission deadline for Cal Rep MFA applicants?

There is no hard deadline. We accept applications on an ongoing basis until all positions are filled.

How long is the MFA program?

Cal Rep is a three year intensive training program. The MFA in Acting is a two year program.

What areas of study are offered through Cal Rep?

Cal Rep offers an MFA in:

  • Acting
  • Management (MBA/MFA)
  • Design {Scenic, Costume, Lighting}
How many shows are produced in a year?

Cal Rep produces and performs four shows a season: two in the fall, two in the spring.

The University Players present six shows a season: three in the fall and three in the spring.

How many students are accepted into the program each year?

The number of students accepted depends on the needs of the company. Each area (acting, management, and design {scenic, costume, light}) will determine how many students may be accepted.

Is Graduate School the right choice for me?

Are you willing to commit the next three years of your life to studying and making theatre? If the answer is “no” then probably not. Cal Rep is an intensive program which demands commitment, focus and your creative spirit.

Can I take classes part-time or join mid-semester?

No. Cal Rep is a full-time, three year commitment.

Can I work another job while in school?

Because the MFA is a practical degree there is little time outside of teaching, performing, and taking classes. Due to the intense schedule of Cal Rep, outside work is rarely feasible.

Are Graduate Assistantships Available?

Yes. Each MFA program (acting, management, and design) has assistantship programs available. A small stipend may be paid to students for teaching classes/labs, working in the shops, managing theatre operations and grading.

How much does graduate school cost?

Student fees for graduate students at CSULB are approximately $2,771.00 per semester.
