For decades, excellence has been the norm in the Department of Theatre Arts at California State University, Long Beach. Whatever the standard, whether distinction of faculty or significance of scholarship and creative professional accomplishments of its graduates, the Department of Theatre Arts at CSULB ranks among the preeminent professional theatre training programs in the country.
CSULB’s strong traditions and reputation for preparing students to enter the theatre arts and entertainment field as performers, directors, managers, designers and educators have enabled our graduates to work n the fields of theatre, film and television.
While part of a large state university, the Theatre Arts Department at CSULB has a conservatory atmosphere where students are nurtured and encouraged on an individual basis. Each student receives opportunities for individual coaching and mentoring, while attending lectures, seminars, laboratory classes, rehearsals, performances and special master classes offered throughout the academic year.
The Department of Theatre Arts offers three basic programs leading to a Bachelor of Arts degree, with opportunities for options in Performance (acting/directing), Technical Theatre (scenery/costume/lighting design), and General Theatre. We offer undergraduates six mainstage University Players shows each season, weekly showcase productions, and student internships at nationally recognized theatre companies including South Coast Repertory, CTG, and the Geffen.
The Theatre Arts Department holds Division II membership in the National Association of Schools of Theatre. The Bachelor of Arts degrees are accredited by the association. The department is also a member in good standing with the Theatre Communications Group, United States Institute of Theatre Technology, the University/Resident Theatre Association, and the International Theatre Institute of the United States.
