Labor Force Workgroup:
Steve Wilson, Ph.D. (CSULB), Ailee Moon, Ph.D. (UCLA), Nancy Takahashi, MPH (UCLA), JoAnn Damron-Rodriguez, Ph.D. (UCLA) & Catherine Goodman, DSW (CSULB)

Last year the CalSWEC Aging Initiative embarked on a comprehensive study funded by the Archstone Foundation to examine the current and future labor force needs for workers in public and private health and social service agencies throughout the state of California that serve older adults. With the expected increase in the older adult population over the next few years, this study is the first of its kind to provide complete statewide data on the current and projected caseloads, projected job openings of aging services workers, as well as barriers to hiring workers to serve older adults.

Public and private agencies throughout California will receive the instrument electronically. These include Adult Protective Service (APS), In-Home Supportive Service (IHSS), Area Agencies on Aging (AAA) and their subcontractors, Adult Day Health Care (ADHC), and Hospice agencies.Recruitment of survey participants is ongoing, but it is expected that over 1,000 agencies throughout California will be invited to participate.Findings from this study will be used for legislation and advocacy for the increased hiring of staff to better prepare our workforce for the expected growth in the older adult population over the next few years. This comprehensive study will be completed in 2008.
