Research Interest:

My experimental research efforts are focused on the fundamental physics and applications of magnetic and optical nanostructures towards ultra-high resolution magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), magnetic micro- and nano-devices in bio-engineering, ultra-high density data storage, nano-electro-mechanical systems (NEMS), micro-fluidics, and ultra-high sensitivity magnetic instrumentation. We combine bottom-up and top-down nanofabrication processes to fabricate our nanostructures, and we generally construct our own research instrumentation to study them. Our recent research focus is mainly on improving the magnetic resonance imaging resolution as well as improving the sensitivity of magnetic resonance detection using both inductive and mechanical sensors. We are developing novel imaging methodologies for MRI that utilize novel permanent magnet structure designs, new sensor shapes, and unique magnetic resonance image acquisition methods.

Welcome to our two new faculty:

Yohannes Abate: new faculty member of the department of Physics and AstronomyPrashanth Jaikumar: New faculty member at the department of Physics & Astronomy

Dr. Abate (left) is a condensed matter experimentalist, who graduated from the University of Iowa. His interests are in near-field microscopy and spectroscopy imaging in metals and semiconductors, plasmonics in nanoparticles and the physics of metamaterials.

Dr. Jaikumar is a nuclear astrophysicist who graduated from SUNY at Stony Brooks. His interests are in high-density matter and its relation to astrophysical phenomena in neutron stars.
