The
Department of Philosophy is pleased to announce the availability
of four scholarships for the 2004-2005 academic year. These scholarships
have been made possible by the generosity of the Whittington family,
the Friends of Philosophy, and an anonymous donor, for which the
Department is extremely grateful.
The
recipients will each receive $500, a specially printed certificate
from the Department, and recognition in the program for May graduation
2005. Two of the four scholarships are in honor of Prof. Paul Tang's
parents, Dr. Pei-Sung Tang and Violet Tang. The eligibility requirements
for these are different from the other two described below. For more
information about the Tang Memorial Scholarships, please see the Department
of Philosophy office (or Prof. Tang). Scholarships

Whittington
Scholarship
The
Whittington Scholarship was established with a generous gift from
Marie Whittington and her late husband, Edward Whittington, retired
Los Angeles commercial photographers and long-standing friends of
the CSULB Philosophy Department. After the Whittingtons raised their
three children, Marie Whittington returned to college and received
a B.A. degree in Philosophy in 1979 from CSULB, graduating "with
great distinction." Her name appeared on the President's list
numerous times, and she was named the Outstanding B.A. graduate.
In addition, she served as President of Phi Sigma Tau. Mrs. Whittington
then returned to complete an M.A. in Philosophy in 1982, writing
her Master's thesis on the topic "Why Preserve Species?"
After receiving her M.A. degree, Mrs. Whittington taught philosophy
for some years as a part-time lecturer at CSULB, Golden West College,
and Marymount College. The annual scholarship is supported by the
interest on a substantial endowment gift from the Whittington's.

Violet
Tang Memorial Scholarship
This
scholarship is donated by a friend of the Philosophy Department
in honor of Professor Paul Tang's mother. At a time (1920's) when
few Asian women attended university, Violet Tang studied chemistry
at the University of Washington in Seattle. After receiving her
B.S. degree, she pursued graduate study at Johns Hopkins University
in Baltimore, where she met her husband-to-be, who was completing
his Ph.D. in cell biology and biochemistry. After receiving her
M.S. from Hopkins, Mrs. Tang pursued a Ph.D. in pharmacology at
Harvard University, but did not finish her doctoral thesis because
of illness.
