Requirements
to Clear the Designated Subjects Credential - Special Subjects |

Once your
application materials have been reviewed, you will be given a
five-year preliminary credential from the Commission. You will
also be given a contract outlining the necessary requirements
and corresponding deadlines to "clear" your
credential requirements.

To clear the designated subjects
special subjects credential, you must
satisfy all of the following requirements:
- You must have the
appropriate valid preliminary Special Subjects Teaching
Credential
- Obtain verification by the
Employing School District (ESD) of two years of successful
teaching experience as authorized by the preliminary
credential defined as follows:
- teaching a minimum
of one course in each of four semesters within the
five-year period of validity of the preliminary
credential
- the renewal of an
employment contract or other employment agreement
with one Employing School District (ESD) for a
minimum of three of the four semesters
- Obtain verification by a
Local Education Agency (LEA) that you have completed nine
semester units, or 135 clock hours, in a
Commission-accredited program of personalized preparation.
You may take these courses through the Department of
Occupational Studies at California State University, Long
Beach. In addition, the Designated Subjects Credential
Office housed with the Department of Occupational Studies
is an accredited Local Education Agency. Moreover,
some of the courses you take for your Designated Subjects
Credential may also be applied toward coursework for a
Bachelor of Science Degree or a Master of Arts Degree in
Occupational Studies.
- You must complete a unit
requirement in health education, including, but not
limited to, nutrition; the physiological and sociological
effects of alcohol, narcotic, and drug abuse; and the use
of tobacco (This requirement must also include training in
cardiopulmonary resuscitation [CPR] which covers infant,
child, and adult CPR skills.
