James Barrera has been active as a performer and educator in the Southern California area for the past 15 years. He has performed throughout the country in solo, chamber, and orchestral settings. As an advocate for classical saxophone and new music, he has commissioned or premiered several works for saxophone and piano, saxophone quartet, and saxophone and flute.
James attended the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music where he studied with Otis Murphy and California State University, Long Beach where he studied under Leo Potts. In addition to his duties at CSULB, he is currently on the faculties of the Orange High School of the Arts, where he directs the OCHSA Saxophone Ensemble.
James makes his home in the city of Long Beach with his wife Janelle, and their two cats.
