Faculty Artist Darrin Thaves is joined by BCCM flute faculty Rena Urso-Trapani and pianist Sandra Bleiweiss, performing an evening of virtuosic flute and piano music from around the world.

The evening will include works by Tchaikovsky, Uebayashi, Kuhlau and Taffanel.

In Two Worlds, the Duality of Music and Society

John Sampen, saxophone/multimedia and Mark Bunce, composer/engineer.

In Two Worlds, the Duality of Music and Society is a multi-disciplinary presentation designed as an exciting "seamless" musical experience featuring projected visuals, interactive electronics and theatrical activities.

Representative composers include John Cage, Toru Takemitsu, Morton Subotnick, Brian Egan, Marilyn Shrude, William Bolcom and Mark Bunce. Actual composer voices are heard via recorded readings and poetry, thus bringing the composer "spiritually" into the live concert space.

The CSULB New Music Ensemble, directed by Alan Shockley, presents a concert of recent works with a theme of "Women of the Americas." Special guest conductor and program curator, Adriana Verdié. The program will feature works by Paula Suarez, Adina Izarra, Adriana Verdié, Pauline Oliveros, and others.

CJO 10th Anniversary Alumni All-Star Concert

Jeff Jarvis, director

Celebrating the 10th Anniversary of his arrival at the Bob Cole Conservatory, Jeff Jarvis has assembled an all-star line up of former members of the award-winning Concert Jazz Orchestra. Over the years, CJO musicians have achieved local, national, and international recognition through numerous appearances at jazz festivals, music education conventions, and command performances. The CJO has won 1st place in the college division of the 2007 and 2009 Next Generation Jazz Festivals, resulting in invitations to perform at the 50th and 52nd Annual Monterey Jazz Festivals. They also won 1st place at the Western States Jazz Festival. Other notable performances include Jazz At Lincoln Center, the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, North Sea Jazz Festival in the Netherlands, Playboy Jazz Festival, Hollywood Bowl, International Association of Jazz Educators, California Music Educators Association, Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, Disneyland, Magic Mountain, Newport Beach Jazz Party, and numerous performances at Los Angeles Jazz Institute events. The CJO has recorded two compact discs, the latest of which resulted in their Downbeat Student Music Award win in the graduate college division. This same recording is presently under consideration for a Grammy nomination.

The Concert Jazz Orchestra has performed with Wayne Bergeron, Jim Snidero, Carl Allen, Wycliffe Gordon, Bobby Shew, Eric Marienthal, Christian Jacob, Les McCann, George Duke, Shelly Berg, Pete Christlieb, Gary Foster, Ndugu Chancler, Airto Moriera, Flora Purim, Bobby McFerrin, Bob McChesney, Ron Stout, Tom Kubis, Eddie Daniels, Dave Pike, Ashley Alexander, John Heard, Bruce Johnstone, Buddy Colette, Don Shelton, Rich Matteson, Tommy Newsom, Jack Sheldon, and more.

Numerous CJO alums have gone on to successful careers as touring and studio musicians, educators, producers, composers, and educators. A testament to their fine musicianship is evidenced in the fact that they have prepared a challenging and exciting program for you with one rehearsal. You will hear the music of Don Schamber, Fancy Boland, Lars Halle, Sammy Nestico, Tom Garling, Jeff Jarvis, George Stone, plus CSULB alums Elliot Deutsch and Tom Kubis. We hope you enjoy this 10th anniversary concert featuring the CJO Alumni All-Stars.
