Department of Mathematics and Statistics, CSULB
Minor in Mathematics (Code MATHUM01)
This minor allows students in other majors to gain an understanding and thorough introduction to university level mathematics. The requirements are as follows:
- Lower Division:
- MATH 122 Calculus I (4 units)
- MATH 123 Calculus II (4 units) * (See note 5, below)
- MATH 224 Calculus III (4 units) * (See note 5, below)
- MATH 247 Introduction to Linear Algebra (3 units)
- Upper Division:
- MATH 361A Introduction to Mathematical Analysis I (3 units)
6 additional units of upper division MATH courses excluding MATH 370A. (6 units)
- Attain at least a 2.0 GPA over the courses taken for the minor.
- File a Declaration of Minor Form (DMF) that has been approved by a Mathematics Minor advisor. (This form may be obtained at the Math. Dept. office, FO3-120.)
- Complete all requirements for the minor by the time the bachelors degree has been completed.
Notes:
If the DMF if filed before receiving the Grad Check, the minor requirements will be checked at the same time as the major requirements. If the DMF is filed after the Grad Check, inform Enrollment Services. A separate Grad Check for the minor will be done. There is no “program planner” or similar document to be filed with this minor, but if substitutions must be made, ask a Mathematics Minor advisor for an appropriate memorandum.
- A minimum of 6 units of coursework towards this minor must be taken at CSULB. All courses counted toward this minor must be in Mathematics departments.
- Majors in the Department of Mathematics are not eligible for this minor.
- The same courses may be used to fulfill requirements for both this minor and the student’s major. Inquiries from students in majors with substantial mathematical requirements are encouraged, especially Computer Science or Engineering, other Engineering disciplines, or the physical sciences.
- If at all possible, register for courses during priority Voice Response Registration (VRR) or U-ASK. Some upper division courses may be canceled due to insufficient enrollment, while others may fill up. Either way, courses may not be available at open or late registration.
- MATH 123 and 224 may be replaced by MATH 222 and one more 3 (or more) unit upper division MATH course (excluding MATH 370A) in addition to the above upper division requirements. For example, a Computer Science (4011) major who takes MATH 122, 222, 247, 323, and 380 for the major may complete the minor by taking MATH 361A and one additional upper division MATH course.
