This minor allows students in other majors to gain an understanding and thorough introduction to university level applied mathematics. The requirements are as follows:
Lower Division:
- MATH 122 Calculus I (4 units)
- MATH 123 Calculus II (4 units) * (See note 5, below)
- MATH 224 Calculus III (4 units) * (See note 5, below)
- MATH 247 Introduction to Linear Algebra (3 units)
Upper Division:
- MATH 323 Introduction to Numerical Analysis (4 units)
- Math 364A Ordinary Differential Equations I Or Math 370A Applied Math I (3 units)
MATH 380 Probability and Statistics (3 units)
and one of the following courses (3 units):
- Math 364B Ordinary Differential Equations II
- Math 381 Mathematical Statistics
- Math 382 Random Processes
- Math 423 Intermediate Numerical Analysis
- Math 470 Introduction to Partial Differential Equations
- Attain at least a 2.0 GPA over the courses taken for the minor.
- File a Declaration of Minor Form (DMF) that has been approved by an Applied Mathematics Minor advisor. (This form may be obtained at the Math. Dept. office, FO3-120.)
- Complete all requirements for the minor by the time the bachelor’s degree has been completed.
Notes:
- If the DMF if filed before receiving the Grad Check, the minor requirements will be checked at the same time as the major requirements. If the DMF is filed after the Grad Check, inform Enrollment Services. A separate Grad Check for the minor will be done. There is no “program planner” or similar document to be filed with this minor, but if substitutions must be made, ask an Applied Mathematics Minor advisor for an appropriate memorandum.
- A minimum of 6 units of coursework towards this minor must be taken at CSULB. All courses counted toward this minor must be in Mathematics departments.
- Majors in the Department of Mathematics are not eligible for this minor.
- The same courses may be used to fulfill requirements for both this minor and the student’s major.
- * MATH 123 and 224 may be replaced by MATH 222 and one additional 3 unit upper division MATH course chosen from 364B, 381, 382, 423, or 470.
