Information for ELM and GE Math

ELM REQUIREMENT
The Entry-Level Math (ELM) examination is a CSU system requirement. All undergraduate students must take this exam or be exempted from it prior to enrollment in math classes. Exemptions from this test are given only to those students who can present proof of one of the following:
- A score of 550 or higher on the mathematics section of the SAT I.
- A score of 550 or higher on the Level IC or IIC of the SAT II: Mathematics Test.
- A score of 23 or above on the ACT mathematics test.
- A score of 3 or above on the College Board Advanced Placement Calculus examination.
- A score of 3 or above on the College Board Advanced Placement Statistics examination.
- Completion and transfer of a course that satisfies the General Education-Breadth or Inter-segmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) quantitative reasoning requirement, provided such course was completed with a grade of "C" or better.
If you score below 50 on the ELM exam, you must enroll in the first semester for the appropriate pre-baccalaureate math course (Math 1 or Math 10) based on your score.
GENERAL EDUCATION MATH
- You should immediately identify the General Education (GE) math courses required for your major.
- For the incoming freshman class of 2006-07 the MDPT is mandatory for those students who wish to register for GE Math courses Math 119A or Math 122.
- You will be permitted to register for Math 103 if you pass the ELM with a score of 50 or above or if you score 550 or above on the SAT or score 23 or above on the ACT.
- You will be permitted to register for Math 112 if you have passed or are exempt from taking the ELM test and you score 550 or above on the SAT or you score 23 or above on the ACT.
- To enroll in MTED 110, you must meet one of the following requirements:
- ELM passing score of 50 or above
- SAT score of 550 or above
- ACT score of 23 or above
