1. What is the Mathematics Diagnostic Placement Test (MDPT)?
The MDPT is a highly successful diagnostic test that is being used to place students into an appropriate GE level math course. We want students to achieve success and understand the concepts that are being presented.
2. Who can take the MDPT?
This test is mandatory for all incoming freshmen who wish to enroll in Math 119A, Math 119B, Math 122, or Math 123 to meet their GE or major requirements.
3. Is the MDPT mandatory at CSULB?
Yes, this test is mandatory for all incoming freshmen who wish to take either one of the following courses:
Math 119A: Survey of Calculus I
Math 119B: Survey of Calculus II
Math 122: Calculus I
Math 123: Calculus II
4. Is there a fee for taking the MDPT?
No fee!
5. What is on the MDPT?
The Calculus Readiness Exam consists of the following topics:
- Rational Expressions and their Graphs
- Exponents and Radicals
- Polynomials
- Geometric Applications
- Functions
- Linear Equations & Inequalities, Absolute Values
- Logarithmic & Exponential Equations
- Trigonometry

6. When should students take the MDPT?
The MDPT should be taken at least 4 days before you register for your classes or attend SOAR. This allows enough time to score the exam and process it so you and your advisor will have the results on time to enroll in the appropriate course.
7. How long is the MDPT?
The Calculus Readiness Exam takes approximately two hours to administer. The test portion of this time is 90 minutes. The test consists of 60 questions.
8. When and where is the MDPT given?
The dates and locations are announced on the MDPT main page.
After your registration form has been received you will be sent an information packet with directions, test location and time. If you have not received your packet Monday before your test, please contact us at (562) 985-4721.
9. How do students register for the MDPT?
Look at the section Registration on this website to download a form. Complete the form and return it as soon as possible to the designated address.
