Department of Mathematics and StatisticsComputer Labs:Math Education Resource Center (MERC)The Mathematics Education Resource Center (MERC) consists of the Mathematics Education Mac and PC Computer Labs and the Mathematics Education Materials and Study Lab in a suite of rooms connected to LA5-253 (Liberal Arts building 5, room 253). The use of computer technology is encouraged, to some extent, in every mathematics education (MTED) course. Other faculty are also invited to visit to see if there are ways your classes could make use of our facilities. Instructors may sign up with the lab assistants in room 253 or call (562) 985-5345 for reserved use of the Resource Center. See a map of the Labs Mathematics Education Macintosh Computer Lab (LA5-255)The Mac computer lab hasMacintosh computers and a video projector. In addition, there is a Mac connected to an LCD panel on an overhead projector for use in the lab, and one Mac on a cart connected to an LCD panel on an overhead projector. The Mac cart is available for faculty to check-out for class demonstrations. This lab can be used for whole class and for individual student work. Microworlds, AppleWorks (formerly, Clarisworks) and the Geometer's Sketchpad are installed on each Mac. We also have tutorials for learning about the operation of a Mac and for learning about Appleworks. Software for elementary and secondary school mathematics is also available for the Mac and for the Apple II. Mathematics Education PC/Mac Computer Lab (LA5-251)The PC/Mac Lab has PCs and Macs and a video projector available for classroom demonstration and use, a PC on a cart with Overhead projector and ViewScreen, a TI83, 86, and 92 with View Screen, and 5 Apple PowerBooks. The Department is connected to the new fiber-optic network and the internet and e-mail available on the PCs. Mathematics Education Materials and Study Lab (LA5-249)The Mathematics Education Materials and Study Lab can be used as a library with K-12th grade math textbooks, professional journals, and other resources, and as a place to do homework using the concrete tools that we use in the mathematics education programs. There are small sets of materials (such as base-10 blocks, pattern blocks, cuisenaire rods, Mira, etc.) available for individual or small groups of students to check out and use in the lab. The Materials and Study Lab also has about 15 Apple IIgs and some older Mac computers for student or whole class use, when the class is using the Computer Lab. The Lab contains tables for individual student and group work. We also have a VCR and a 27" TV monitor on a cart so that faculty can check them out for class use. |
