Open University Enrollment

For students who have not applied to the university in time for the semester, but who wish to take classes, you may begin taking classes that will count toward your degree, by taking courses in Open University. However, you should apply to the university and department for regular admission in a subsequent semester.

How to enroll in Open University

(Concurrent Enrollment at University College & Extension Services)

University College & Extension Services (UCES) administers registration for students who have not yet been accepted by the university as graduate students. This includes international students who applied too late for regular university admission.

Graduate students can count up to 6 units of UCES credit courses towards the M.A., with permission of the Graduate Advisor.

Students should obtain such permission prior to taking the course. Students should also make certain they have the prerequisites for the courses. UCES should be used for prerequisite and beginning level graduate courses only; 600-level courses cannot be taken by UCES except under extraordinary circumstances. Students are limited to 9 units per semester. In addition, students should be aware that their registration depends on obtaining permission of the instructor, who will take into account whether the course is already full and whether the student is qualified for the course. Thus, students who take courses through Open University should seek approval of both the Advisor and the course instructor before the course begins. Although these may seem like a lot of obstacles, these permissions are needed to ensure that students are taking appropriate classes and that the classes can count toward their program. For several students in our program, this system has allowed them to begin the program while they sought regular admission to the university.

Students are allowed to register on the first day of classes, but not before. On the first day of classes, they should go to UCES and pick up the Open University Add-Drop Form. They should then take this to the first class, and, if possible, get the instructor's signature as evidence of permission to add the class. When all faculty signatures have been obtained, students should take the form to the Linguistics Department for the signature of the Chair. They should then return the signed form to UCES by the date indicated (usually one month after classes begin).

In terms of assignments, grading, participation in class, and other requirements of any given course, Open University students are treated the same as any others.
