Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Certificate

Offered through University College and Extension Services

========================================

Developed by professional geographers, this certificate program will give you hands-on skills in the new technologies known as geographic information systems.

Geographic information systems (GIS) provides the ability to automate map production and to integrate earth imagery with other data to solve geographic problems. Results can be displayed in a variety of ways including new maps, tables, charts, or all of these in combination. GIS is becoming a widely available and affordable technology which can be used by nearly every corporation, governmental agency, or nonprofit organization. This certificate is designed for practitioners who are the managers, technical professionals, and support staff responsible for managing and using GIS.

The GIS Certificate consists of 120 hours of instruction in CSULB's department of geography GIS lab. You will take four core modules and select six elective modules from the application and technology modules.

Core Modules (Complete all)

  • Understanding GIS
  • GIS Data Acquistion and Management
  • Problem Solving with GIS
  • Map Design and Production for GIS

Elective Modules (complete 6)
  • GIS in Urban Planning
  • GIS Applications in Transportation
  • GIS Data Acquisition and Management
  • GIS for Public Works/Utilities
  • GIS for Environmental Management and Natural Resources
  • Remote Sensing and GIS
  • GPS and GIS
  • Gis Using ArcView
  • GIS Using Arc/Info
  • Watershed Modeling using ArcView
  • GIS in Water and Wastewater Utilities

Who Should Attend?
  • Individuals involved in designing, developing, and implementing information systems based on geography
  • Managers, technical professionals, and support staff responsible for managing and using GIS
  • Those considering a challenging career utilizing GIS

You Will Learn:
  • How to design a geographic information system of data and maps
  • How you can use geographic information systems to solve a number of problems
  • How to generate maps and charts using GIS software
  • How to apply GIS

How Do I Complete the Certificate?
  • Complete ten modules (four core modules and six elective modules).
  • Complete the certificate project including creation of data sets, charts, and maps.

No make-up classes are available.
