FACILITIES

While most narrative and video productions in the Department of Film and Electronic Arts are shot on location around Southern California, we also have a small film production stage (600 sq. ft.) that was recently refurbished. In addition to new acoustic treatment, the studio includes a portable green screen. We also have a dedicated television studio (554 sq. ft.) and recently updated control room. (376 sq. ft.) Equipment includes 3 Sony studio cameras, TelePrompter, GrassValley switcher, and Behringer audio mixer.

Last year we also developed remote television capabilities for our students. Equipment includes a Panasonic field switcher, monitor array, 6 Sony BetaCams, 2 Sony handheld digital cameras, Alesis audio mixer, 15-foot camera jib, 3 lipstick cameras, and a video Steadicam for multiple camera productions of sporting, concert, dance, and theatre events.

Some productions in our department have also been shot on the large main stage (2070 sq. ft.) of the University Theatre next door to our building, and in various other locations on campus, such as the Beach Auditorium in the Student Union and beautiful Japanese Gardens. The leadership and staff of the Theatre Arts Department have also been gracious in granting permission for a number of student projects to be shot in their facilities next door.

Thanks to an exciting agreement between the CSULB College of Continuing Education, our advanced television production students are also granted time each semester to work in the Advanced Media Productions professional television facility and staff in our building. The 2450 sq. ft. studio features 4 HD cameras.

All documentary productions and most student narrative projects at CSULB are shot in HD and HDV, although some of our intermediate narrative directors prefer to shoot on 16mm and super 16 film. Some advanced senior production students also elect to shoot on 35mm film. We have a variety of Panasonic and Sony digital cameras, plus 35mm and 16mm Arriflex, Aaton, and Éclair film cameras designated for use by students who have been accepted into our Narrative Production Option and by video production classes that are open to everyone, such as FEA 403.

Lighting kits include a variety of tungsten lamps up to 2K and several HMI's. We also have a lightweight camera dolly and track, a second 15-foot camera jib, Fisher 11 dolly, and 20-foot DSLR slider for studio use.

In addition to our own equipment inventory, a number of our students have also received 16mm cameras through the generosity of the Panavision Student Filmmaker Program.

Another vital component of CSULB's production program includes digital audio, which provides production crews with a variety of either Fostex or Tascam packages, complete with boom poles and Sennheiser condenser microphones.

Post production facilities include a recently remodeled instructional lab containing 9 Apple x86 stations with Avid Media Composer 5, Final Cut Studio 3, Pro Tools 8, Adobe Creative Suite 4, and Maya 2009. We also have a second computer lab and 9 Apple x86 editing rooms with Avid Media Composer 5 and Final Cut Pro Studio 3 software. Two of those rooms are equipped with Pro Tools 8, as is our Avid/FCP media transfer suite. We have five other Pro Tools rooms, including an upgraded ADR/Foley studio, 5.1 surround mixing room, and vocal booth.

Production Management students also work in our computer lab, where a variety of useful production contracts, forms and programs, including Movie Magic scheduling, budgeting, and Final Draft screenwriting software, are available to them.

Student films in FEA frequently enlist the help of production design students from the Art Department and often include original scores composed and recorded by students in the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music at CSULB, which operates a digital recording studio equipped with the latest industry standard equipment and software for film and television productions.

Our Department also entered into a special arrangement with pumpaudio.com, an independent music library, where students may download professionally recorded songs and film music for their productions for a modest license fee.

The Department of Film and Electronic Arts also has a conference room that can accommodate over 20 people for production meetings, auditions, and table readings.

SURFSIDE PRODUCTIONS

COLLEGE BEAT TV PRODUCTIONS

College Beat is a closed-circuit television production company located in the Student Union. Students from across the campus create and produce programming that is seen in the dorms and on Charter Cable 18 and Lakewood Comcast Cable 28 as part of CSULB's "Beach TV" programming.

BEACH RADIO

K-Beach Radio is a fully student run, global radio station broadcasting online at http://www.kbeach.org from CSULB's Student Union. Having recently celebrated its 10 year anniversary, Beach offers many volunteer opportunities for students interested in entering the field, ranging from on-air hosting to working behind the scenes and learning how to run a radio station.

K-Beach also has a digital live room where acts can come in and play to an audience in the Student Union and hosts a weekly concert series at the Nugget Pub and Grill on campus. Interested students should contact K-Beach's general manager via email at gmkbeach@hotmail.com.

K-JAZZ RADIO

CSULB FILMMAKERS ASSOCIATION

Formed by two enterprising production students three years ago, the film club is an officially sanctioned campus organization that is dedicated to making movies outside of our formal curriculum. Association members find that participation is a great way to get hands-on experience while becoming acquainted with students who share many of the same career goals.
