"Dr. Bob" came to in 1977 from James Madison University in Virginia. Prior that, he taught at the University of Memphis, Shaw University, Ohio State University and the University of Cincinnati. He also worked for the Radio Corporation America following a stint with the United States Navy. He remained in the Naval Reserve, and retired after 30 years service at the rank Captain (0-6). He was honored as CSULB's Outstanding Professor in 1991.

Bob retired in 2000, and returned to a previous avocation: professional jazz musician. He plays tenor saxophone and clarinet, and sings with his wife, Their website is http://www.msscarlettproductions.com/

He continues to teach one course per semester in one of his areas of mass media policy and research, international media systems and or media marketing, sales and promotion.
