Gabe Bartalos: Abhorrence and Obsession

University Art Museum

Opening of a major exhibition of works by special effects artist and horror film director Gabe Bartalos. The exhibition includes a number of large scale works Bartalos produced for Matthew Barney's Cremaster series and set designs from a range of cult horror films designed by Bartalos including Brain Damage and Skinned Deep. Exhibit runs through December 8.

Special effects master Gabe Bartalos sits down for a rare in-person conversation with legendary artist and film director Matthew Barney. The two artists will share their insights on special effects in such films as the Cremaster Cycle (1995-2002), giving voice to their thoughts, processes, and motivations.

1912-2013: 101 Years of Michelangelo Antonioni

This one-day conference explores the work of one of the most important directors of modern cinema. Film scholars Murray Pomerance, Thomas Harrison, Mary Ann M. Carolan, Fulvio Orsitto, and Fletcher Beasley will discuss the many facets of Antonioni's creative output, from his use of color to his choice of music. The conference will conclude with a screening of the recently restored La notte (1961). Presented in collaboration with the George L. Graziadio Center for Italian Studies.

    Directed by Patricia Martínez de Velasco.

    In this heartfelt dramatic comedy about family relationships, award-winning director Patricia Martínez de Velasco explores the ties that bind the patriarch of a family with his wife and three daughters. Mexican actor Jesus Ochoa in his role as Rodolfo Guerra gives a terrific performance as the husband who feels unapreciated. At the risk of losing his job, Rodolfo is determined to untie the lies that he has been living with in order to discover the truth.

    Directed by Matías Bize

    Andrés has been living in Germany for 10 years. He returns to Chile to bring closure on his past before settling for good in Berlin. During his visit, he attends a friend's birthday party where he rediscovers the world he had left behind, including his long-time love Beatriz. This reunion could change Andrés' life forever.

  • Thurs Oct 18 - ¡Vámonos Con Pancho Villa! (Let's Go With Pancho Villa, 1936)

    Directed by Fernando de Fuentes

    Based on the novel ¡Vámonos con Pancho Villa! written in 1931 by writer and journalist Rafael Felipe Muñoz. The novel was later adapted for the screen by Muñoz, director Fernando de Fuentes, and poet Xavier Villaurrutia, who at one time was the teacher of Nobel Prize winner for Literature Octavio Paz. Considered one of the great epic films about the Mexican Revolution, ¡Vámonos con Pancho Villa! is the third film of the trilogy made by de Fuentes depicting a critical view of the reality of armed conflict and its effects on people. Prisionero 13 (1933) and El compadre Mendoza (1934) are the other two films made by de Fuentes as part of his revolution trilogy. His epic style was compared by critics to that of legendary director John Ford. Doroteo Arango, known as Francisco Villa, is portrayed without adulation in a story about six friends who join the Mexican Revolution and give their total committment to it and its charismatic and multi-faceted leader. Actor Domingo Soler gives a strong portrayal of Villa in beautifully- accomplished black and white photography by Jack Draper and Gabriel Figueroa.

  • Thurs Oct 25 - Julia, Toda En Mi (Julia, All In Me, 2002)

    Directed by Ivonne Belén

    A poetic journey through the life and work of Puerto Rican poet Julia Burgos, considered one of the most prolific figures in Puerto Rican literature. This film's script is based on a series of letters that Burgos sent to her sister Consuelo during her voluntary exile in New York and Cuba between 1940 and 1953. Major historical events including the Second World War, the Spanish Civil War, Puerto Rico's political upheaval, and social movements that occurred in New York, Cuba and Europe form a background to this very personal account of a poet's life. The documentary has actors from Puerto Rico, including Benicio del Toro and Jacobo Morales, reading on camera with music composed by Raymond Torres-Santos.
