José Sánchez-H. was born in Bolivia. He holds a Ph.D. in Speech, Communication and Theatre (Radio, TV and Film) from the University of Michigan. He is the recipient of many creative and scholarly awards, including the CSU Rosebud Award for achievement in media arts and education, and the Independent Feature Film Market Fellowship.

He is the co-author of the feature script La Paz which was a semifinalist in the Nicholl Fellowship in Screenwriting Competition of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. He supervised the restoration of the feature film Mina Alaska by Jorge Ruiz, the first Latin American film to be restored by the Academy Film Archive of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Film Archive

His on-going research includes his work on film preservation with the Academy Film Archive, and the Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival. He is the author of the book The Art and Politics of Bolivian Cinema, which was nominated for a Theatre Library Association Award. His films have aired on Sundance Channel's Arte Latino Filmfest and have screened at various international film festivals. Segments of his films have appeared on CNN Showbiz Today. He writes for TCM International Film Guide, published annually in the U.K. by Wallflower Press.
