CSULB students who received financial aid during the 2009-10 academic year and have remaining Stafford loan eligibility, may be eligible for summer assistance. For those students who do not have remaining Stafford loan eligibility, a PLUS loan may be an option (Parent PLUS for Undergraduate students, Graduate PLUS for graduate students). You must be enrolled at least half-time to be eligible for summer loans.

Please allow a minimum of two weeks for processing.

  2. Submit your completed request form to our office.
  3. Applications will be accepted beginning 04/01/2010.Applications received after the end of your summer enrollment period cannot be processed. Summer Stafford Loan Requests should be submitted prior to June 1, 2010 to ensure proper processing of the request and timely disbursement of loan funds.

Summer loans will be processed only after we verify you have enrolled in at least 6 units for summer (5 units of required degree coursework for Graduate students). We will send you an email notification confirming your loan eligibility once the loan has been processed.  Disbursement will occur approximately 10 days after we process your loan, but not earlier than 10 days prior to the first day of your first summer class.

SAP for the Spring 2010 term will be run after Spring grades have been posted (approximately June 15).  If you are found to not be meeting SAP standards once SAP is run, you will be ineligible to receive the Stafford Loan.  The loan will be cancelled; if funds have disbursed, you will be required to return those funds.

Federal Direct PLUS Loan (Parent & Graduate)

The Federal Direct PLUS loan is a non-need based loan, and eligibility is based on the credit history of the borrower.  The maximum amount borrowed cannot exceed the student’s cost of education minus any other financial assistance (including scholarships, work-study awards, and the Federal Stafford Loan).  Since there is no “annual maximum” for the PLUS Loan (other than cost of attendance):

  • A Parent PLUS Loan may be an option for dependent students who have borrowed their maximum annual Stafford amount (the parent would be the borrower, though).
  • A Graduate PLUS Loan may be an option for graduate or doctoral students who have borrowed their maximum annual Stafford amount (the student would be the borrower).

As with Stafford Loans, PLUS Loan eligibility cannot be determined until the student is registered for the Summer Session. The PLUS loan request should be submitted as soon as possible after the student registers for summer classes. The loan application will take approximately 7-10 business days to review. We will send you an email notification confirming your loan eligibility once the loan has been processed.

To apply for a Summer PLUS Loan

  1. Parent (or Graduate Student) Borrower must complete the Summer 2010 PLUS Request Form (available April 1, 2010). This form authorizes the U.S. Department of Education to perform a credit review.
  2. First time borrowers Direct PLUS borrowers are required to complete a PLUS promissory note. Prior borrowers who completed a PLUS promissory note for the 2009/2010 academic year are not required to complete a new PLUS promissory, unlessan endorser was required to secure that loan.

Graduate PLUS Borrowers Only

In addition to the above, Graduate PLUS borrowers must also complete the Graduate PLUS Entrance Counseling.  The counseling only needs to be completed once at CSULB, so if you have previously borrowed a Graduate PLUS loan at CSULB, you do not need to complete the counseling again.

The PLUS loan cannot be disbursed until the promissory note has been completed, and the loan credit approved.

Please note: you cannot rollover your summer charges to fall 2010.
