Academic Scheduling

Active Learning Classrooms

Background

CSULB Active Learning Classrooms (ALCs) are where instructors and students experience a flexible, student-centered learning environment. See the complete Active Learning Classroom List.

An ALC offers:

  • a learning environment which facilitates active learning, not traditional lecture.
  • the ability for instructors to easily engage with students during activities.
  • technology allowing students to present work for review by peers and instructors.
  • furniture and writeable walls designed to facilitate small-group work.

Instructor’s desiring to schedule classes in ALCs must meet the following criteria

  • Adopt pedagogy consistent with the aims and capabilities described above.
  • Actively engage in the instructor ALC online community.
  • Undergo training conducted by Academic Technology Services (ATS) to learn equipment functionality.

NOTE: ALC scheduling priorities during Phase I Schedule Building are assigned to individual colleges as described below.  For a complete list of Active Learning Classrooms and Scheduling Priority, see the Active Learning Classroom List

Classes

During Online Schedule Building

Phase I:

Designated Colleges have priority scheduling rights in Active Learning Classrooms.  Should a college find that departments from another college have scheduled in one of the active learning classrooms at a time they require, they will contact the “offending” department, advise them that they may not schedule during Phase I, and request that class be removed from the classroom.  Should the department fail to relocate the class, the college may call Academic Scheduling to have the class removed.  Colleges must complete their scheduling of active learning classrooms by the end of Phase I.

Phase II:

Any department may schedule courses in the active learning classrooms on a first-come basis. No approvals are required during Phase II; however, class instructors must meet the criteria outlined above.

At the End of Online Schedule Building

Interim Director of Academic Facilities Michael Blazey will review all classes scheduled in active learning classrooms to determine if scheduled instructors have prior experience in the classrooms. Inquiries will be made to the departments of instructors determined to have no prior experience in the active learning classrooms. Specifically, the department will be asked if the instructor is prepared to conduct instruction in the classrooms consistent with the classrooms’ design and whether the instructor has or will agree to undergo training. Academic Scheduling will be notified if the responses to these inquiries indicate classes need to be reassigned out of the active learning classrooms.

After the Class Schedule is Available to Students

Academic Scheduling assigns all classrooms after online schedule building has ended. To request assignment in an active learning classroom after online scheduling closes:

  • Determine room availability via CS Link reports or Ad Astra scheduling calendars.
  • Request approval via email to interim Director of Academic Facilities Michael Blazey and include information regarding instructor intent and training.
  • Submit the schedule request to Academic Scheduling.  Note in the Additional Information field of the Schedule Change Request Portal that the request has been approved, and forward Director Blazey’s email approval to ES-Academic_Scheduling@csulb.edu.

Special Events and Meetings

Generally, events and meetings may not be scheduled in active learning classrooms. They are not listed on the Event Management System (EMS) calendaring system.

Currently the only exceptions are the active learning classrooms in the Academic Services (AS) building.  All event requests for these rooms only are to be routed through Director Blazey for review prior to being forwarded to the Events Services Office (Pam Jesse) for scheduling.  The Event Services Office will forward the request to Academic Scheduling.  If the classroom is available the event will be scheduled in EMS and Ad Astra.

Requests must include a brief description of the activity’s requirements necessitating scheduling in an active learning classroom.   Requests that cannot be scheduled due to conflicts with scheduled classes or events will be returned directly to the requestor. Only events following this protocol may be scheduled.
