Browsing the Class Schedule

You can look at course offerings sorted by subject, college (all subjects grouped under a specific college), or General Education (GE) category. Click one of the buttons at the top of the page to get a list of the associated options.

Scroll down the 'Browse by' page to find the specific subject, college or GE category you want to view. Click on the desired link to view a listing of classes. Notice the "Class offerings as of" date at the top of the page, which indicates when this list was last updated. You can get up to the minute, detailed information on course offerings by using MyCSULB. Select the "Search Schedule of Classes" option under "My Menu".

Understanding the Information Listed

Review the notes below to assist you in understanding the information presented about the CSULB course offerings listed.

  1. Course Subject Area

  2. Subject Note: This information may apply to any or all of the classes under this subject. Read these notes before registering for a class.

  3. Course Subject Abbreviation and Number:

    Course numbers indicate the following student levels:

    Student Level Course Numbers
    Pre-baccalaureate (no degree credit) 0-99
    Lower division (freshman and sophomore) 100-299
    Upper division (junior and senior) 300-499
    Postbaccalaureate 500-699

    Title: Full course title and current course descriptions are also available by using MyCSULB. Click on "Course Catalog/Descriptions" under "My Menu." For assistance using MyCSULB, check out 'Using MyCSULB.'

  4. Units: Indicates the number of credit units for the course. Courses offered for variable credit display units in a minimum to maximum range (e.g. 1-4). You will be informed of the unit range when you register and will be asked to enter the number of units you wish to take.

  5. GE: Indicates how the course meets General Education requirements. The first set of letters and numbers indicates the GE category(s) the course satisfies (e.g. D2) for all students. The following letters identify the specific GE designation for students under the 1999 GE pattern:

    F Foundation
    G Global (Courses marked D2 and Global meet the D2a requirement for students under the 1985 and 1993 GE patterns.)
    H Human Diversity (Also required for students under the 1993 GE pattern.)
    I Interdisciplinary (Capstone)
    A Advanced Skills (Capstone)
    S Service (Capstone)
    L Linked (Capstone)
  6. Course Notes: These notes describe registration requirements for all courses with multiple component types (e.g. LEC/LAB). Concurrent registration is required for multiple class sections.

  7. Section Number: Class section number is two digits. Some classes may also have a suffix to help identify linked (e.g. LEC/LAB) component type class sections.

  8. Class Number: A unique 4 or 5 digit number used to register for a class. You will need this number to register for the class.

  9. Class Notes: These notes apply to an individual class section. An explanation of each code immediately follows each subject's course offerings. Click on the class notes numbers to jump to the class notes text. You should read the class notes before registering for a class.

  10. Type: Indicates the course component type for a class section.

    • ACT Activity
    • LAB Laboratory
    • LEC Lecture
    • SEM Seminar
    • SUP Supervision
  11. Days: Class meeting days:

  12. Time: Class meeting time. Note that classes with multiple meeting patterns will have more than one line displayed.

  13. Location: Indicates building and room where class will meet. You may wish to review the campus map in advance of the class.

  14. Instructor: Name of instructor assigned to the class section. "Staff" will appear if an instructor has not been assigned.

  15. Comment: This column includes additional information about this particular section, such as:
    • Classes offered through 2 or more different departments
    • Consent (instructor or department permission) required for registration
    • Honors class sections
    • Additional meeting times, days, rooms
    • Other useful information
