Enrolling Before Classes Start

All registration and schedule adjustments before the first day of instruction must be done through our self-service system at MyCSULB. Payment is due within 30 days of registration or by the pre-semester payment deadline, whichever date comes first. Once the pre-semester deadline has passed, payment is due the day of registration.

Pre-semester fee payment deadline dates:

  • Fall 2013: August 14, 2013
Deadline to pay fees before instruction begins
  • Spring 2013: January 9, 2013
Deadline to pay fees before instruction begins

See Fees and Finances – Basics. Once instruction begins, however, the registration and schedule adjustment method varies depending on the date, and payment is due the day of registration. See Enrolling After Classes Start.

If you are a new CSULB student, go to Information for New Students.

Continuing Students

Continuing students are those who attend each fall and spring semester or have filed an approved Request for Leave for any semester they do not plan to enroll. (See Educational Leave.) Notification of enrollment appointments is sent to continuing students by email. It is therefore imperative and your responsibility to ensure that you specify your preferred email address at MyCSULB under Student Center/Personal Information and to check your email often to avoid missing important, official university communications.

Continuing students get first access to register for classes. For additional information, see Registration Access.

Prepare to Register

Check all the items below to avoid delays. Not every item will apply to you, but those that do will help you to register in the most efficient way.

  1. Campus ID Your campus identification number is needed to register and appears on your admission and enrollment appointment notifications.

  2. Password A password is needed for access to your MyCSULB account. The first time you access the system, you will be prompted to enter your birthdate (MMDDYY, e.g. 060386) in order to create a password of your choice.

  3. Enrollment Appointment Note your registration access date and time by going to Student Center/Enrollment Dates at MyCSULB. This information is also in your enrollment appointment notification.

  4. Holds Clear any registration holds listed in your enrollment appointment notification. View your holds and how to clear them at MyCSULB under Student Center/Holds.

Select your Classes

  1. View classes: Schedule of Classes For assistance with your class search on MyCSULB, go to Using MyCSULB.

  2. Major Check your major. Some classes are restricted to students in certain majors.

  3. Prerequisites For many courses, you will not be allowed to register unless you have met the prerequisites (required courses, test results, specific class level, etc). Courses from a previous institution attended will be accepted automatically if they have been evaluated as equivalent to required CSULB courses. Check the Course Catalog / Descriptions at MyCSULB or the printed CSULB Catalog to determine what requirements must be met in order to take a class. If you have transfer credit that has not been equated to a CSULB course, or if you believe that you have met the prerequisites in some other fashion, see the department or course instructor before you attempt to register for the course.

  4. Permission Some courses require department or instructor consent to register. If this is the case, you will need to contact the appropriate department or instructor. If permission is given, the department will need to enter the permission into the student system but cannot register you in the course. Note: You are responsible for following up and registering for the course at MyCSULB. An online permission does not mean that you are enrolled in a class, only that the system will allow you to enroll in the course when you register via MyCSULB.

Have alternate classes in mind in case your class is cancelled or fills quickly. You may add yourself to a waitlist if a class is full. You may register for up to 13 units during early registration and up to 16 units beginning:

  • Fall 2013: August 5, 2013 (beginning at 8:00 am)
  • Spring 2013: January 7, 2013

Always check the final exam schedule before you register for your classes to prevent conflicts and to ensure you have adequate time to prepare for all your exams.

Validate Your Enrollment

Prior to your enrollment appointment, you have the ability to enter your class selections into your shopping cart and validate your 'intended' enrollment. This feature allows you to determine if you are 'eligible' to enroll in the course, i.e. pre-requisites needed, time conflicts, registration holds, etc.

Access this functionality through the 'Plan' Link in your Student Center. Add classes to your shopping cart to plan your enrollment for the term. When you click on the "Validate" button, the system will run a check for possible conflicts and eligibility. Your course selections can remain in your shopping cart until you are ready to submit for enrollment during your appointment period.

It is important to note that validating your classes does NOT result in enrollment. You will need to officially enroll in classes during your assigned appointment period.

Register

Register at MyCSULB as soon as possible on or after your enrollment appointment date and time. Access is available any time except during regularly scheduled maintenance times and:

  • August 22 - 23, 2013
    Registration unavailable
  • January 17 - 18, 2013
    Registration unavailable

If a class is full, you can place yourself on a waitlist provided the list is not already full.

If you are enrolling in a course in order to remove the original grade from your grade point average, see How do I repeat ("Repeat-Delete") a class?

Under certain circumstances you may choose to take a class for credit/no credit (CR/NC) instead of a letter grade. You may also attend a class and receive no recorded grade (audit the class). However, you cannot request a grading option during the self-service registration period. Grading option changes must be submitted in person after classes start. See Change Your Grading Option.

Pay Your Fees

It is very important to understand CSULB payment procedures and deadlines. Failure to confirm your registration request with payment, by your payment due date, may result in cancellation of your class schedule.

Go to Fees and Finances - Basics to view fee amounts, methods and deadlines. You can make a payment before registering but will need to check your MyCSULB account after registering to determine if any additional fees are due. If you qualify for a full or partial financial aid fee deferment, you will only need to pay any remaining balance due.

Be sure to check your account balance regularly at MyCSULB, especially after paying fees and any schedule changes. You are encouraged to make payment immediately to confirm your registration requests.

Adjust Your Schedule - if necessary

You may adjust your schedule at MyCSULB until the last day of the Self Service Registration and Adjustments period:

  • Fall 2013: September 9, 2013
Deadline to withdraw or drop classes using MyCSULB (by 10:00 pm)
  • Spring 2013: February 4, 2013
Self Service Registration and Adjustments ends

For instructions on adding, dropping, swapping or waitlisting classes, go to Using MyCSULB. To change your grading option for a class, see Change Your Grading Option. To register or change your schedule after the end of the Self Service Registration period, see Enrolling After Classes Start.

Important! It is YOUR responsibility to drop classes, regardless of the reason, by the deadlines to avoid charges or be eligible for a full or pro-rated refund. Failure to track your enrollment and student account balance at MyCSULB may result in charges and holds preventing critical university services. If you had a financial aid fee deferment in place when you registered and are later determined ineligible for aid, or you decline your aid, you must drop your classes. Students who do not plan to attend the semester at all, should drop all classes before the first day of instruction to get a full refund. After instruction begins, students who drop all their classes will owe pro-rated fees based on the date of withdrawal.
