Using Academics - Progress to Degree

Introduction

My Degree Progress is an interactive advising tool that allows you to access your individual academic record and to plan your academic career at CSU Long Beach. My Degree Progress, accessible through the Student Center on MyCSULB, provides you with the most up-to-date assessment of your progress toward graduation.

How to Access MyDegree Progress

Login to MyCSULB, and click Degree Progress in MyMenu. This will take you to "Advisee's Degree Progress Report," where you will need to verify the Academic Institution field as CSU Long Beach. Next, select "Baccalaureate" in the Report Type pull-down menu. Click "Go".

Please be patient while the system performs a lot of calculations to determine your current progress to degree! Once the calculations are complete, your degree progress will appear. The first thing you will notice is three tabs across the top: (1) Degree Audit, (2) Course History, and (3) External Credit.

Screenshot showing the tabs mentioned above

The Degree Audit tab is a detailed summary of your degree requirements —both completed and still unmet. Clicking the Course History tab displays a summary of all the CSULB courses you have taken. And clicking the External Credit tab links to a display of all of your transferred course work.

Academic Objective and Summary

At the top of each display for Degree Audit, Course History, and External Credit, you will see a box labeled "Current Academic Objective" and another labeled "Current Academic Summary."

Purpose of the Academic Objective and Summary Boxes

The Academic Objective and Summary boxes are designed to display at a glance your current status in terms of major, minor, catalog year requirements, GPAs, academic standing, and graduation plans.

Click the Requirement (Catalog) Term and Expected Grad Term hyperlinks for important information.

Understanding the Academic Objective and Summary

Your current academic objectives include your intended degree and your declared majors and minors. The Requirement (Catalog) Term column displays the catalog requirement year for each of your objectives. It is important to note that the requirements for these catalog years are the basis of your degree audit. The academic summary box includes the last term you registered for courses and your current academic standing, as well as your cumulative overall and CSULB GPAs.

Hyperlinks are provided for access to additional helpful information.

Degree Audit Tab

Purpose of the Degree Audit

The Degree Audit is designed to provide you with detailed information regarding your various degree requirements—those you have already completed and those that you have remaining to complete for your degree.

Understanding the Degree Audit

Your Degree Audit matches all of your course work (both CSULB and transfer) and test credit with your particular degree requirements to give you the most up-to-date assessment of your progress toward graduation. Your audit looks at everything you have taken in the past as well as any CSULB courses you have enrolled in for the next term or terms. It is important to note that the audit assumes you will successfully complete all of the future course work in which you have enrolled.

How your Degree Audit is organized

Click the "COLLAPSE ALL" button. You will see that your Degree Audit is organized so that overall requirements, such as total units, the undergraduate overall GPA, the Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement, and Transfer Credit status, appear first. This information is followed by General Education (GE) requirements and then by your major and minor requirements.

Screenshot showing a "collapsed" degree audit page

The last section, titled "Course Review," lists courses that have not been assigned to fulfill GE, major, or minor requirements. This section can be helpful to you and your adviser to determine if degree requirement substitutions might be appropriate. Please note that transfer courses used as part of a GE area or full certification will be listed here as well.

How to understand your Degree Audit

When you first open your Degree Audit, only the requirements that have not been fully satisfied will display. An icon to the far-right side of each requirement will indicate the status of each. By reviewing the detail, you will know immediately what you still need to complete your degree.

Degree Audit Features

A legend is provided at the top of the audit to explain icons and course enrollment codes used throughout the Degree Audit.

Degree Audit Icons

  • Requirement Met
  • Requirement Not Met
  • Met If Successfully Completed
  • Exception to Requirement

Course Enrollment Codes

  • EN: Courses taken through enrollment at CSULB
  • TR: Courses transferred from another institution
  • TE: Test Credit
  • OT: Other Credit

Degree Audit Icons appear to the right of each requirement to reflect its completion status. Any approved exceptions are flagged.

For each course requirement, a grid featuring the courses you have taken that meet a specific requirement will appear. The grid provides course details including the Enrollment Code from the legend, the grade you earned or whether it is in-progress, as well as if a course meets a certain GE Area requirement or if it is a repeated course.

Course History Tab

Purpose of the Course History

The Course History section is designed to provide a consolidated record of your CSULB courses—those you have already taken, those courses in progress for the current term, and those future-term courses for which you have already enrolled.

Understanding your Course History

All CSULB courses are displayed on the Course History grid and closely resemble your unofficial transcript, including term of enrollment, course descriptions, grades, and repeat indicators.

Additional information, such as the Grade Basis and Requirement Designation, is available when you click the "ADDITIONAL COURSE INFO" tab. To see your entire course grid and additional course information at one time, click the expand button. The Grade Basis indicates the grade status (i.e., graded or credit/no credit). The Requirement Designation tells you whether the course counts toward GE credit and, if so, what GE area(s) it may fulfill. Repeat Codes are displayed for courses that have been repeated and graded. The code indicates how credit earned and GPA calculations are affected by the repeat. Since how repeats are counted is affected by the grade earned, these codes and resulting adjustments cannot be reflected until after the term is completed.

Course History Tab Features

You can sort the grid by term, subject, units, or grades just by clicking a column heading. Or you can Sort by Subject and Catalog Nbr by clicking the yellow button. To return to the original sort sequence, you will have to exit and re-enter the Degree Audit. You can also click the "Unofficial Transcript Request" link to view your courses, units, and academic standing sorted by term.

Clicking "Sort by Subject/Catalog Nbr" will sort and redistribute Subject and Catalog Nbr by alpha order.

External Credit Tab

Purpose of the External Credit Tab

The External Credit Tab is designed to display a record of all credit that has been granted from sources other than CSULB coursework. This includes courses taken at other institutions, test credit such as Advanced Placement, as well as other credit such as Military credit.

Understanding the External Credit Tab

The Summary of External Units includes a list of the types of external credit applied to your Degree Audit, including the evaluation status of the credits, the total units, and GPA. See the CSULB Transfer Credit Information box directly to the right of the Summary for important details regarding transfer credit.

Screenshot of Summary of External Units content

Below the summary, there are detail sections which include each course or test and the exact CSULB equivalent.

Frequently Asked Questions

By regularly reviewing My Degree Progress, you will be able to spot potential problems and resolve them promptly. You should discuss any apparent problem or other issues—including GE, your major, or your minor—with your academic advisers for clarification and resolution as soon as possible. The following Frequently Asked Questions should be helpful:

  1. How often should I review MyDegree Progress?
  2. What if I repeat a course?
  3. What if I take this course?
  4. What if I change my major?
  5. Where can I go for help with MyDegree Progress?

How often should I review My Degree Progress?

Your Degree Audit is current as of the time you access it on-line. Any change in your enrollment—such as dropping or adding a course, changing your major, repeating a course—will have an effect on your Degree Audit. So we encourage you to review your progress when you make registration changes, when grades have been posted, and in preparation for advising and registration appointments. Reviewing it regularly can really help you stay on track!

What if I repeat a course?

If you have repeated any courses and they have been graded, your Degree Audit and Course History will indicate in the Repeat Code column whether the posted grades are or are not included in your GPA and how units earned has been affected. Your unofficial transcript also reflects these repeat adjustments.

Since the grade you earn in a repeated course effects how prior attempts will be evaluated, repeat adjustments cannot be reflected until the course has been graded. As a result, unit totals will incorrectly double-count repeated courses that are in progress until adjustments are made at the end of each semester.

What if I take this course?

The "Course List What-If" functionality simulates how courses in which you have not yet enrolled would apply toward your current academic program. You can search for possible courses in a given subject and then try out individual courses to determine whether each course would or would not fulfill your requirements.

Screenshot of Degree Progress Report showing the Course List What-If button

By entering a course in the Subject field, your search will result in a list of courses in that subject. Choose from the list to see on your Degree Audit how the course affects GE or major requirements.

What if I change my major?

Before you change your major, we encourage you to try the "Quick What-If" option in your Degree Audit. This feature allows you to create a simulated Audit for a different Plan (major or minor), or a different Subplan (major concentration, emphasis, or specialization), helping you to determine whether to change your plans.

Screenshot of Degree Progress Report showing the Quick What-If button

The simulated Degree Audit will match your courses (CSULB and external) to a different program. This helpful tool is a summary of the requirements for a different degree or minor—both completed and unmet, and will give you a picture of your progress toward graduation should you change your plans.

Enter the following:

  1. "UGRD" in the Career field

  2. "UGD" in the Program Override field

  3. Use the lookup button in the Plan Override field to find the appropriate undergraduate major or minor. Enter the first three or four letters of the department for the major you would like to use in the simulation (e.g., "PSY" for Psychology, or "RGR" for Romance, Germanic, Russian Language and Literatures).

  4. Use the lookupbutton at the Subplan Override field to select a concentration, emphasis, or specialization, if the Plan requires one.

NOTE: If multiple Subplan entries appear, select one from the list provided. If you receive the system response of "No matching values were found," there are no Subplans associated with the Plan (major/minor).

  5. Use the lookup to find the current-term code. Use this code in the Required Career Term, Required Program Term, Required Plan Term (e.g., major, minor), and Required Subplan Term (e.g., major concentration, emphasis, or specialization) fields.

For General Education Issues

  • If your Degree Audit indicates you did not receive General Education credit for a transfer course that you believe meets a GE requirement, do the following:

    1. Look at the External Credit tab or your Transfer Credit Report, and review it to determine whether the transfer course in question has been posted to your record.

    2. If the course is not included on the External Credit tab or your Transfer Credit Report and you are certain that your transfer institution has sent your transcript to CSULB Enrollment Services, immediately inform Enrollment Services of the situation by submitting a Problem Resolution Worksheet. Enrollment Services will research the status of your transcript and respond to you.

    3. If the course is included on your Transfer Credit Report but with no GE credit, check with your transfer institution (e.g., that school’s Schedule of Classes) to confirm that the course in question is GE certified for the term in which you were enrolled. Alternatively, you can check the web site ASSIST.org to determine whether your transfer course is certified for GE credit. (ASSIST is an on-line student-transfer information system that shows how course credits earned at one public California college or university can be applied when transferred to another.)

If the information from your transfer institution or from ASSIST indicates that your transfer course is, in fact, GE certified, please inform Enrollment Services by submitting a Problem Resolution Worksheet.

  • If a General Education Certification that you submitted from a transfer college does not appear on your Degree Progress Report, use the Problem Resolution Worksheet to report the problem to Enrollment Services.

  • If you want to know whether a certain CSULB course meets a GE requirement, check the "General Education Courses" section of the Schedule of Classes. The course must be on the list for the semester in which you enroll. The Schedule of Classes is available on-line.

  • If your Degree Audit shows that you still need courses in some GE areas, but you do not know what to take, check the list of GE courses by category in the Schedule of Classes. The Schedule of Classes is available on-line. For further help, consult with an adviser at the Academic Advising Center.

Other Degree-Requirement Issues

  • If you believe that degree requirements appearing on your My Degree Progress are different from those requirements for your catalog year as described in the Undergraduate and Graduate Catalog, see your major adviser. If there is an error that your adviser cannot resolve, submit a "Problem Resolution Worksheet" to Enrollment Services.

  • If you have filed a Request to Graduate, the section of the report relating to your major may not yet reflect all of the adjustments made on your Program Planner or by your adviser via the Adviser Request System. Enrollment Services will send you an e-mail message once all adjustments approved by your adviser have been made. After those adjustments have been made, if you still believe that a course substitution, exception, or waiver is missing from your Degree Audit or is incorrect, or that a transfer course should have been used to meet a degree requirement, or that your catalog year is incorrect, consult with your major adviser. If there is still a problem that the adviser cannot resolve, submit a "Problem Resolution Worksheet" to Enrollment Services.
