Baja ACDFA Conference

CSULB Dance will be participating once again in our regional American College Dance Festival Association Conference, this year being held at Cal State Dominguez Hills on March 23-26.  Congratulations to student choreographers Estela McNaughton and Joey Navarrete whose dance Held By Hope was picked by the dance faculty to represent CSULB as an adjudicated work alongside Professor Keith Johnson’s Dreaming, Op.15 No. 3.  Congratulations also goes to student choreographer Ashley Dragon whose dance Waves of the Siren will be featured in the Informal Concert at the conference.

From the Interim Chair

Every spring semester things start off quickly, but Spring 2012 has really started off with a bang!  In two weeks, we have had showings, spacing rehearsals for our upcoming concert, master classes, the audition for the spring CSULB Dance in Concert, and a plethora of students getting their schedules ironed out.  Yes, spring finds us busier than ever and eager to dig deeper into our teaching and artistic/scholarly activities.  This semester, our BFA students are working with BFA Co-Advisor Keith Johnson and Head Athletic Trainer John Siegel on a fitness program geared specifically towards the needs of dance performers.  Thirteen seniors are taking the new Senior Seminar course with Heather Ahern and myself, and are busy working on their personal websites, resumes, and artistic statements, all helping them to be more prepared for the realities of our profession.  Below, you can check out all of the guest artists, guest speakers, and master teachers that we have lined up for this semester, all giving our dance majors direct contact and exposure to artists and professionals thriving in the field of dance and the arts.  Spring also means that we have three fully produced dance concerts:  the Contemporary Dance Concert, our MFA concert Bloom, and the spring CSULB Dance in Concert featuring faculty and guest artist choreography.  Thanks to the success of our Susan McLain Scholarship fundraiser last fall, we will be holding another post-concert Scholarship Fundraiser, this time benefitting all of our Dance Scholarship Funds, following our final CSULB Dance in Concert show on Saturday, April 28.  Join the faculty as we enjoy home-baked desserts and toast to our new 2012-13 Scholarship students.  Lastly, consider joining us on May 3 and 10 as our Senior Seminar students speak about their Community Projects in our first Senior Colloquiums, from 6-7:30 pm in Studio 7.  As you can see, it’s non-stop training, rehearsal, study, and artistry here in the CSULB Department of Dance—stop by and see us sometime!
