In Collaboration: Bill T. Jones and CSULB Department of Dance
The Department of Dance and the Carpenter Performing Arts Center present the work of internationally renowned choreographer Bill T. Jones in our fall concert, which will also feature dances made by CSULB Faculty Gerald Casel, Sophie Monat, and Andrew Vaca. The highlight of the concert is the Southern California premiere of Jones’ landmark piece Reading Mercy and the Artificial Nigger, a work inspired by a Flannery O’Connor short story that transcends boundaries as it mixes dance, literature, and race. Ten of the finest CSULB dancers were selected to perform the work, and had the amazing opportunity to work with company members of the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company in preparation, and two days of rehearsal with Mr. Jones. Please do not miss this milestone event!

"The Long Road Down" by Lisbeth Scott
Ever wonder what it takes to produce a music video? Well, a group of 13 dance majors and CSULB students, along with Department Chair Andrew Vaca, found out on September 16 as they danced and took guerilla video footage around Long Beach for the latest music video for Zone recording artist, Lisbeth Scott. A longtime friend of Vaca’s, Ms. Scott is composing the music for Vaca’s November dance premiering in the In Collaboration show. This brought them together to work on the video for the song “The Long Road Down” from the History Channel miniseries Hatfields & McCoys. Vaca suggested that Scott enlist the services of Dance’s own Technology Advisor, Gregory R.R. Crosby, as the director, editor, and cinematographer for the shoot, while Vaca and some hip-shaking Long Beach residents came up with the eventual choreography for the video.
