Letter from the Chair

I had the pleasure of witnessing the lighting rehearsal of Bill T. Jones’ Reading, Mercy… last night and it just made me that much more excited to share our In Collaboration concert with our supporters, friends, and families. The work is not only a testament to the power of concert dance, but it is a visually stunning and enormously evocative piece. I have also now seen ACT I of In Collaboration, CSULB premieres by Sophie Monat, Gerald Casel, and me, two nights in a row and I know that this entire show will engage, entertain, and certainly impress you.

We just added Pre-Performance lectures before In Collaboration with our own Dr. Colleen Dunagan. Dr. Dunagan will discuss Bill T. Jones' work Reading, Mercy and the Artificial Nigger within the context of his larger body of work and the short story by Flannery O'Connor, "The Artificial Nigger," from which the dance takes its name. Both the dance and the story investigate the nature of mercy and how our perceptions of identity—both our own and others—is grounded in our daily experiences, bringing with it the potential for change as well as rigidity. She will provide insight into Jones's dance by discussing his approach to the relationship between choreography and text and O'Connor's approach to fiction, which draws upon the rich tradition of Southern fiction. There are Pre-Performance lectures both Friday and Saturday evening at 7 pm in the Carpenter Performing Arts Center. They are free with your paid admission to the show.

Lastly, I just wanted to remark upon an article that appeared in the Los Angeles Times last weekend announcing the creation of a new university dance department here in Los Angeles county. In the article, there was a statement regarding the great amount of dance talent in Los Angeles, and what a shame it is that “they have no place to go.” While I wish all involved in this new department well, I would also like to guarantee to all of you that after you see our In Collaboration… concert you will know that there is definitely already a place for those talented students to go. The moment you have all be waiting for has come! As CSULB's official dance organization, Off 7th Dancers will be selling newly designed zip up hoodies and American Apparel Tanks at the Faculty Dance Concert. They will be sold before, at intermission, and after the show in the lobby (both nights) so come check out the new merchandise.

Both the tank and hoodie can double as a congratulatory gift to your child or friend who performed beautifully as a part of In Collaboration, or as a special holiday gift.

Prop 30 Announcement

Proposition 30 Approval Update

With the approval of Proposition 30 in our recent election, the CSU Board of Trustees approved a plan that would rescind the $249 semester fee increase that took effect this fall. Passage of Prop. 30 means that annual tuition fees for full-time undergraduates will now return to the 2011–12 rate. CSULB Fall 2012 students will receive a refund of this semester's fee increase of $249. While the passage of Prop. 30 does not address the long–term impacts of the severe budget cuts the CSU and our campus have endured over the past several years, it offers some hope that the state and its citizens are very concerned about the disinvestment trends in public education that continue to negatively impact California.
