Dear Prospective Student:

Thank you for your interest in the Department of Dance at CSULB.  As Chair of the Department, I want to share my enthusiasm for dance and provide information that will assist you as you make the important decision of which college dance program is best for you.

I often ask myself, “Why do I love dance so immensely?”   In dance I find humanity, spiritual truth, physical marvels, profound discoveries and aesthetic beauty. It fosters the individual and builds community.  I believe that dance transcends cultural boundaries and elevates the human spirit.  

It is for these reasons that we invite you to consider studying dance at California State University, Long Beach.

Through the rigorous technical training and academic study of dance at CSULB, you will develop an articulate body and augment your abilities to physically and theatrically express your ideas.   In a challenging and exciting training environment our degree programs are designed to create well-rounded dancers with a deep understanding of the field of dance.

Our Dance Center is considered to be one of the premiere dance facilities in the world!  In addition to seven dance studios, classrooms and a theater designed for concert dance, there are places to congregate and relax with other students in a facility where the pulse of dance and art can be felt.  You are invited to visit the CSULB campus and tour the Department of Dance in person. It is best to call the Department Office beforehand at 562. 985.4747 to arrange your visit.  You may also attend one of our concerts to experience the impressive talents of the Department’s faculty, guest artists and students. The CSULB Department of Dance is a supportive community where students and faculty frequently interact.  You may trust in the excellence and value of your education as all majors’ classes are taught by renowned faculty whose careers as teachers, choreographers, performers and scholars are impressive.   Some faculty are currently directors and choreographers of regional and national dance companies, and most have had international performing careers.  The faculty members teaching theory courses are innovators in their areas of dance research.  You will be challenged to achieve your maximum potential and the faculty will assist you as you work to achieve your personal, academic and professional goals.

At CSULB, we honor the traditions of dance throughout history and work together to contribute to the future of the field.  We ask you to inquire, reflect, and innovate as we intend to broaden your awareness of the choices that are available when you complete your degree and graduate.  We are proud our alumni who are working in the field of dance as choreographers, performers, teachers and arts leaders, and of those who have found successful careers in other arenas.
