Auditions for all prospective
freshman and transfer dance majors or minors are held 3-4 times each
academic year. Beginning in 2008, there will be a separate audition
for transfer students, and it is recommended that transfer students
attend this audition date.
To receive an audition application form by mail, please fill out your contact information in the form above and submit the information via email. A form will be mailed out to you at the address you specify. This form must be returned to
the department in order to reserve a place at the audition since auditions
are limited to 60 participants per audition. Upon receipt of your application,
you will be notified by mail confirming your audition date. If the preferred
audition date is full, students will be asked to schedule for the next audition. The cut off date for accepting applications will be two days prior to the audition date, and applications will not be accepted after that time.
The Dance Center is located on the North side of campus, directly
off of Atherton Street and near the Pyramid. You can locate the Dance Center
using the following maps:
The audition is a technique class divided into three parts: a ballet barre and center, a modern center, and across-the-floor movement sequences. The Department of Dance faculty will teach the audition class and serve as panelists for assessing potential students. Students will be evaluated on technical proficiency including placement, stability, strength, musicality, body articulation and coordination, qualitative range, and ability to accurately replicate movement sequences. The panel is also interested in the individual artistic expression, power and performance quality of each dancer. Wear solid color leotards and tights or unitard, ballet shoes for the ballet barre, and bare feet for the remainder of the audition. Cover-up clothing such as sweatshirts and t-shirts, is not allowed.
Visitors are not allowed in the studio during the audition,
but can observe the audition through the studio windows. The videotaping
or taking of photographs of the audition class is strictly prohibited.
California students must attend an on-campus audition. Out-of-state and international students may audition via videotape, but in-person auditions are preferred. The taped audition should include an abbreviated ballet barre that demonstrates technical proficiency at the intermediate level, center work with modern vocabulary, and across-the-floor phrases which show virtuosity in spatial awareness and aerial movement skills. A short individual piece of choreography must conclude the presentation. The tape should be a maximum of 20 minutes.
All levels of technique classes
are entered through placement auditions. A recommendation will be made as
to the appropriate level of technique for students accepted into the Dance
Major or Minor. Further screening will take place the first week of classes
to determine final placement.
Students may audition twice for entrance into the dance major or minor program,
however, they may only audition once per semester.
A separate application is
required for admission to the University. You may apply on-line at csumentor.edu or phone the automated information line at 562-985-4111.
TRANSFER APPLICANT REQUIREMENTS
Call the Department of Dance Office at 562.985.4747 to request
an Information Packet. This packet includes an audition application necessary
to secure an audition slot. Transfer audition dates are August 28, 2007
or February 22, 2008. August 29, 2008 is also an option. It is expected
that most transfer students will attend the February Audition, which is
specifically designed for transfer applicants.
The Transfer Audition will comprise of an intermediate level technique
class in Ballet and Modern, along with individual presentations of choreographed
solos to a panel of faculty adjudicators. Because of the nature of individual
time slots for presenting choreography, please plan on spending 1 –
1 ½ hours following the scheduled audition times. Time slots will
be assigned when you register at the audition.
(See general Undergraduate Audition Guidelines for more information.)
For the individual presentations of choreography, you will perform a 2-3
minute dance solo demonstrating your dance technique and artistry. This
piece must be original work choreographed by you. The purpose of this segment
of the audition is to view and assess your choreographic skills, as the
art of dance composition is integral to the dance major at CSULB. This segment
of the audition may be in the style of Modern, Jazz or Ballet.
For this segment, the following skills will be evaluated to determine whether
you will be admitted to the Department of Dance as a major or minor: compositional
elements (e.g. musicality, use of space, levels, focus, transitions, movement
qualities and dynamics), technique and artistry, clarity and cohesiveness,
originality, and performance qualities.
Bring your music on CD or i-Pod. It is suggested that you bring a backup
if
you have burned your own CD, as some CDs do not function on our equipment.
Wear a leotard and tights or a unitard with appropriate shoes. Please do
not wear
skirts, T-shirts, shorts, sweats, or costumes.
This segment of the audition may be followed by a brief interview. Auditions
slots will last 5 minutes per person.
