Latino Political Roast (Next event November 4, 2005 with Sen. Martha Escutia)
Greetings: The CSULB Chicano and Latino Studies Department is proud to present the 4th Annual Latino Political Roast to raise scholarship and development funds for its graduate and study abroad programs. During the last 3 years, the department has awarded scholarships to over 60 students that traveled to study in Cuba, Puerto Rico and Mexico from previous “roast” proceeds, alumni donations and our event sponsors. At this year’s event, we would like to celebrate and humor Fabian Nuñez’ election as the new Speaker of the California State Assembly, as well as to recognize his contributions to the labor movement and a promising career in public service. As a role model to our youth, we could not think of a more deserving individual to honor as some of his most prominent colleagues and labor leaders have an opportunity to “roast” him in good-natured political humor. For this year’s Roast, George Pla and Cruz Bustamante have agreed to serve as co-chairs of the event and we anticipate that State Democratic Chair Art Torres will again serve as the Roast Master. We would appreciate your participation and ask you to consider this also as an opportunity to support our commitment to education, promote the importance of political leadership and civic participation, and have fun as we strive to direct our young people to follow in Fabian’s footsteps. Your financial support is critically vital to the success of our students and the scholarships we are able to grant enable them to improve their language skills, as well as to gain greater understanding of their community and cultures of origin as future leaders in a multicultural society and global economy. Please join us, and our major sponsors: · The California Teachers Association · The Cordoba Corporation · Museum of Latin American Art · L.A.
