The Institute for Integrated Research in Materials, Environments, and Society (IIRMES) is an interdisciplinary institute that aims to specifically increase and widen the scope of cross-disciplinary research in the physical, natural and social sciences conducted on campus. By fostering and promoting a broad influx of ideas and talents from diverse fields, IIRMES aims to beneficially increase peer exchange and collegial interaction between the faculty and students of the various disciplines to promote scholastic endeavor and create new funding opportunities. IIRMES currently houses two centers that help to service the educational and research needs of the 23 campuses in the CSU system: The Facility for Elemental Micro Chemical Analysis (FEMCA), which is a core facility partially funded by California State University Program for Education and Research in Biotechnology (CSUPERB), that houses an impressive array of equipment for elemental and isotopic microanalysis and, the Center for Proteomic Analysis (CEPA) that provides students and faculty throughout the CSU system with access to a state-of-the-art proteomics facility.
