Redband Parrotfish


Size:    6 to 11 in.
ID:     tiny yellow spot and two or so black dots on upper body; forked tail with black dots on the tips;
usually a pinkish band from mouth to below eye; white dot on tail top in initial phase (see photo # 7)

Habitat:   reefs and sandy areas
Typical food:   algae and coral polyps
Other information:   their "beaks" are used to scrape algae and polyps from coral and rocks, but in this process a lot of
limestone is also eaten and ground in their gullets so that they excrete much sand for the tropics; shy
