Lined Seahorse



Size:   2.5-6 in.
ID:   Lines on head and often down neck and back, some have fleshy appendages

Class:  Actinopterygii  /  Ray-finned fishes
Order:   Gasterosteiformes  /  Sticklebacks
Family:  Syngnathidae  /  Pipefishes  and  Seahorses
Genus Species:  Hippocampus erectus   /  Lined Seahorse

Habitat:  branches of gorgonians, sea grass; curl tail around to hold on; sometimes float free
Typical food:  suck tiny animals (usually crustaceans) into narrow tube mouth
Other information:  make a noise like a snap when exploring new situations; male incubates eggs in
his brood pouch (a special fold in his skin) in which a female laid the eggs
