Great Barracuda



Size:   1.5-6 ft.
ID:   Long silver cylindrical body, large underslung jaw, usually have scattered
dark blotches on body

Class:    Actinopterygii  /  Ray-finned fishes
Order:   Perciformes / Perch-like fishes
Family:   Sphyraenidae / Barracudas
Genus Species:   Sphyraena barracuda / Great Barracuda

Habitat:   drift around reefs
Typical food:   gobies, mojarras, atherinids, young parrotfish, needlefish, grunts, puffers,
jacks, seabasses, halfbeaks, mackerels, snappers
Other information:    open and close mouth to help respiration; often solitary; curious near divers
and often approach them or follow them but keep a ten feet or so distance from them
