Foureye Butterflyfish

Size:  3-6 in.
ID:  black spot ringed in white on upper rear body

Class:  Actinopterygii  /  Ray-finned fishes
Order:  Perciformes  /  Perch-like fishes
Family:  Chaetodontidae  /  Butterflyfishes
Genus Species:  Chaetodon capistratus /  Foureye Butterflyfish

Habitat:  upper parts of coral reef
Typical food:  tiny shrimp, crabs, worms, living coral animals and algae (from scraping reef with their bristly teeth)
Other information:  false eye spot fools predators into lunging the wrong way, also eye bands help camouflage the location
of their true eyes to confuse predators as to the direction the little fish will dart when attacked; often in pairs and apparently mate for life;
during reproduction the female launches herself toward the surface (with the male following) and releases her eggs which are then
fertilized by the male; at dusk they find shelter in a reef recess and settle for the night (their daytime markings change and colors pale)
