My research area includes the synthesis, crystal growth, structural, and property characterization of solid-state materials. These materials arecrystalline and their crystal structures can be probed with X-ray diffraction techniques. We seek to design synthetic methods to prepare functional materials and to tune their properties. A state-of-the-art X-ray diffractometer with a CCD detector is available for the structure determination of crystalline samples. One research area that is currently supported by the National Institute of Health (NIH) through the SCORE grant is to develop porous chiral catalysts and adsorbents that can be used for the preparation of chiral pharmaceuticals that are safer and more effective than racemic mixtures. The importance of this project comes from the fact that the pharmacological effect of chiral drugs is generally restricted to one of two enantiomers because of the inherent chirality of natural biological molecules and processes.
