CSULB Email – Spam, Anti-Virus, and Attachment Protection

Network Services provides spam, anti-virus, and attachment protection for all email messages that are sent to an address which ends in @csulb.edu.

Spam

Subscriptions to global Realtime Block Lists are used as well as multiple rules and heuristics to determine if a message is potential spam. Any message that the email system determines to be spam will have the 'Subject:' field modified with the phrase '[SPAM]'. This helps prevent any false positives from being deleted and also allows the recipient to easily filter messages by the 'Subject:' field. Instructions on how to filter messages using CSULB Webmail can be found by going to the login page, http://webmail.csulb.edu/ , and clicking on the 'Help' link.

Anti-virus

The anti-virus system is updated every hour with the latest threats seen from around the world. Any email message that is found to contain a virus is deleted from the system.

Attachment vulnerabilities

Attachments in messages are checked for software vulnerabilities. These vulnerable messages are quarantined for 7 days. A new message is sent to the intended recipient explaining why the attachment might be vulnerable and instructions on how to have the message released from the quarantine.
