Minutes of the Meeting of Beach-CERT, Wednesday, 6/15/2005 @ 2:00pm in LA5-352
1. Next Meeting: Wednesday, July 13, 2005 @ 2:00pm in LA5-352
2. Major Topic: Identity Theft – Steve La discussed how rampant identity theft is in the US compared to Europe. He stated that the main reason for so much identity theft is because many things in the US are tied into our Social Security numbers and that is not the case in Europe. In Europe, Social Security numbers are used only for Social Security purposes.
Additionally, credit card use in Europe is far less than what it is in the US. This means less possible exposure to fraud in Europe. However programmable Smart Cards are in favor in Europe and limits the amount of information available to vendors again lessening the users exposure to fraud.
Steve also said that now is a good time to educate users, friends and family about phishing if you have not done so. Tell them what it is and how to recognize it.
3. Progress Report: Anti-Spyware development – Steve stated that we have licensed to protect 4000 users both on campus and at home from viruses, worms and spyware thanks to the 3 year contract that was recently signed with Symantec. Phase 2 is to enhanced security features such as personal firewall and intrusion detection for at least 500 users initially.
4. Progress Report: Email Security development – Matt Black discussed his recent testing of IronPort which is an anti-spam and anti-virus email application. He explained how IronPort and Brightmail functions and how it is better than past solutions.
Steve stated that the funding for these applications has been approved and we’re just waiting for purchasing and should be getting it sometime during the summer.
5. Progress Report: Data Storage development – Steve stated that the new storage hardware should be on campus within the next two weeks and will provide us with around 9TB.
Steve also stated that he will have to create some sort of data storage user policy to prevent users from storing non-work related files.
6. Progress Report: Other Summer 2005 Projects – Steve stated that he usually sends an email with all the summer projects to his staff at the beginning of summer.
One of the projects is the Desktop Security Distribution Project headed by Luc Tran. The goal is to enhance distribution of desktop security patches using the new MS WSUS technology.
Another project is the Identity Management System upgrade headed by Eric Ham. The purpose of this project is to enhance Identity Management System functions provided with TIM version 4.6.
The Internet Redundancy Project is another project scheduled for this summer. The purpose is to provide redundant links from the CSULB data backbone to the WAN.
Network (Homeland) Security is a project to enhance internal network intrusion detection and to deploy self-defense technology to safeguard our campus data network, 24x7. This project will initially limit itself to intrusion detection mode. Intrusion prevention will come at a later date.
MS MOM is a project that Scot Woodyard and Luc Tran have been working on. It is an application that enables us to centralize and integrate server management on both UNIX and Windows platforms.
The Wireless Intrusion Detection Project goal is to deploy wireless Intrusion Detection and Prevention Technology to protect our campus wireless infrastructure.
7. Vendor Demo: Lunch and Learn session with APC (6/21/2005) – Steve stated that he has sixteen slots available for a lunchtime presentation from APC who will discuss strategies for using uninterruptible power supplies.
8. Technical Presentation: Communigate Pro Email Features – Matt Black discussed the results of the updated and upgraded campus email system evaluation. The improved system should be implemented sometime next week or the week after. He further stated that if you want a demo account, to email him with the request and he would get you set up.
