The CSULB Department of Dance and College of the Arts present CSULB Dance in Concert, featuring premieres andrevivals by faculty choreographers Keith Johnson, Rebecca Lemme, Sarah Swenson, Andrew Vaca and guest choreographer Marjani Forté.  Performances run Thursday-Saturday, November 20-23 at 8 pm, with an additional matinee Saturday, November 23 at 2 pm.

Rebecca Lemme’s Tell Me Why Not is an intimate, yet explosive, abstract dance work that explores desire, fear, urgency, yearning, and surrender set to a live rendition of Janis Joplin’s “Ball and Chain”. Sarah Swenson is re-mounting two movements from her signature work, Fimmine (women), choreographed in 2005 to the music of Philip Glass. The work originally had its World Premiere in Toronto, Canada. With A Fist Raised Up Towards Turquoise Skies, A Bomb Blooms by Keith Johnson explores ideas of the known and mysterious in both personal and universal themes such as intimacy, memory, and prophecy. Andrew Vaca’s new work is a jazz-influenced group dance set to EDM (electronic dance music) by artists Chris Domingo, Alec Sky, and Swedish producer Hosini. Way Chill (Neon Dreams) includes inspirations of walking urban American cities at night and the abstracted shapes of neon lights accompanied by projections from Gregory R.R. Crosby. Guest Artist Marjani Forté is making a new ensemble work on students which has a foundation in discussing race, community, and individuality. Ms. Forte is a two-time Princess Grace Awardee as well as a recipient of the 2017 Outstanding Performer Bessie Award for her work with as one of 21 Black Womyn and Gender Non-Conforming artists of the collective Skeleton Architecture. She currently resides in Pasadena and is the co-founder with Nia Love of LOVE/FORTÉ A COLLECTIVE.

CSULB Dance in Concert opens Wednesday, November 20 and runs for five performances, closing on Saturday, November 23.  Shows are daily at 8 pm with an additional matinee Saturday, November 23 at 2 pm.  Shows are held in the Martha B. Knoebel Dance Theater on the CSULB campus (located just east of the Walter Pyramid on Atherton St.).
