Gabe Bartalos: Abhorrence and Obsession
Admission: Free to UAM members + CSULB students, faculty and staff;
General Public $4, children under 12 free if accompanied by an adult

For over fifteen years, Gabe Bartalos has broken new ground and created constantly evolving characters and sets—part set design, part art installation— that tie the psychology of emotional responses to the visual effects of the moving image. Bartalos ventures into unexplored territory and opens up a new dialogue that pushes us to rethink our ideas about visual effects and character design in relation to film, the visual arts and the film audience. The exhibition will include a number of large scale works Bartalos produced for Matthew Barney’s Cremaster series and key set designs from a range of cult horror films designed by Bartalos including Brain Damage and Skinned Deep. This is the first show in a museum context of Bartalos’ work and expands the UAM interest in blurring the boundaries between the visual arts, film and popular culture.

Saturday, September 7 at 8pm
University Art Museum
Gabe Bartalos in Conversation with Matthew Barney
Carpenter Center Tickets: $15 general admission
$50 VIP Seating includes reserved seats and a private post event reception

Special effects master Gabe Bartalos sits down for a rare in-person conversation with legendary artist Matthew Barney. Join us for an unforgettable evening as these two share their insights on special effects on such films as the Cremaster Cycle (1995-2002), giving voice to their thoughts, processes, and motivations. Gabe Bartalos is a prosthetic effects artist who specializes in character effects and explicit gore. He has developed the prosthetic make-up effects for Barney since 1991 and in 2004 he made his directorial debut with the surrealistic film Skinned Deep, which he also wrote and produced. Bartalos has worked on cult classics such as The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (1986), Leprechaun 4: In Space (1996), and Godzilla (1998). His work pushes us to rethink conventional visual effects and set design.  Mathew Barney is an American artist who works in sculpture, photography, drawing, and film. His epic Cremaster Cycle, explores the process of creation through sculpture and video in five feature-length films. These films are imaginative and brilliant and examine the transcendence of physical limitations within an interdisciplinary art practice.
