The College of Engineering Writing Center is a central location where Engineering students can receive a number of services regarding Writing and Composition issues. At the Writing Center we can evaluate writing ability to determine which technical (or other) writing courses will be necessary or valuable for the student's academic progress. We can determine a student's eligability to meet the WPE/GWAR requirement through a Portfolio class. We also perform 1-on-1 tutoring by appointment, issue referrals to other campus resources as required, and provide general guidance and advice on accessing and utilizing both on and off-line academic resources. We can assist, in coordination with the Thesis Office, graduate students with their requirements, and can also provide general information and advice on Research methodologies and resources.
The Writing Center is open to all COE Students, Staff, and Faculty as a centralized source for the latest information regarding professional, technical, and academic writing techniques and pedagogies. Our philosophy is: If we don't know the answer, we will find it! Please feel free to drop in to discuss ANY technical or academic writing issue or concern; the purpose of the Writing Center is to try to provide solutions and advice to all members of our community in this field. We can provide individualized assessments and customized assistance on either a formal or an informal basis.
This Spring 2009, in addition to personalized services, we will be conducting Workshops on various issues of expressed interest to the COE Community. Please look out for the Advertisements. At this time we are also beginning to build up a text and electronic reading Library of useful professional, technical, and academic books related to Composition and Engineering for the use of our COE community.
The Writing Center is a friendly and casual environment. No concern or issue is off limits! Please feel free to make an appointment through Voicemail (562) 985-8399, or simply stop in to discuss any Writing need or concern.
