New Program of Outreach for Young Girls - "Engineering Girls @ the Beach"

Continuing its mission in encouraging girls to become more interested in math, science and engineering, the College of Engineering at CSULB will host for fourth- through sixth-grade school girls its first "Engineering Girls @ the Beach". Read more in the Inside CSULB article

From the surveys and participant feedback collected over the past eight years regarding our long-standing "Women Engineers @ the Beach" program, it is clear that having a separate event for younger girls would be more beneficial to them. This semester, a new program of outreach, designed with more age-appropriate learning experiences, will be offered for female students grades 4 through 6. Instead of the traditional "Engineering Awareness" workshops that have been provided for older students, learning outcomes will include several standard sets from the California Science Framework and curriculum (e.g., Standard Set 1a. Physical Science: Students know how to build and design simple series and parallel circuits by using components such as wires, batteries, and bulbs).

As this program is a pilot, a limited number of schools are participating. A pre- and post- survey will be administered to gauge the level of learning and interest of the participants. Results will be used to study the effectiveness of the outreach and provide additional information for program improvement.
