Structures and Materials is a major engineering discipline that focuses on (1) the development and investigation of new and advanced materials, which include metallic alloys, ceramics, polymers, and composites, and (2) the use of those materials on various structural analysis and design applications.
Research in this discipline
includes analysis and design of composite structures, modeling
of composite failure, structural design optimization, damage detection
techniques, aerospace structures, aeroelasticity, and development
of computational techniques such as finite element methods, neural
networks and genetic algorithms.
