Control Systems

Control Engineering is an engineering discipline that focuses on the mathematical modeling of dynamic systems, analyzing their dynamic behavior, and using control theory to design a controller that will cause the systems to behave in a desired manner.

The design of a control system involves: modeling the plant, measurement device and controller, analyzing the block diagram or signal flow graph to determine stability, designing of a controller via time domain, frequency domain or ad-hoc methods and choosing the input based on a guidance system. System performance and design may evolve via a root locus plot, Bode plot, and/or time domain simulation.

Research includes development and implementation of advanced control theory to aerospace, mechanical, and electromechanical engineering problems.  Application can be to wide variety of consumer products, as well as, military applications.

Other research includes large scale systems and decentralized control and estimation; robust and H-infinity control; Control applications in economics and related areas such as Operations Research and Control of mobile robots.
