Dr. Mahyar Amouzegar Appointed Associate Dean for Research
College of Engineering Dean Michael Mahoney has appointed Dr. Mahyar Amouzegar
as the college’s Associate Dean for Research and Development.
Dr. Amouzegar earned his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from UCLA in 1994.
His areas of research at UCLA were nonconvex programming, system engineering,
telecommunication systems and computational algorithms.
He is founder and editor in chief of the Journal of Applied Mathematics
and Decision Sciences which is online at (http://www.hindawi.com/journals/jamds/index.html).
Dr. Amouzegar has served as a senior policy analyst in the National
Security Division at the highly prestigious RAND Corporation
(http://rand.org) in Santa Monica since 1998.
While at RAND, Dr. Amouzegar averaged about $1 million in
grant funding per year. He was excited to hear about all of our
current research and grant-oriented projects at CSULB and is
interested in pursuing any and all potential avenues of funding for
the college. Dr. Amouzegar has taught at five different schools,
including UCLA, CSULA, CSUDH, Massey University in New Zealand and the
Pardee RAND Graduate School.
"Dr. Mahyar Amouzegar will be an outstanding supporter and mentor
for our junior faculty" said Dean Mahoney.
"We have 12 untenured faculty members and will hire many more over the
next 5-10 years as our valued senior faculty members retire.
Mahyar will assist these junior and other faculty members in their
research efforts and help them get outside funding from both public
and private institutions. His broad perspective, open-mindedness and
engaging personality will help tremendously in these efforts."
In addition to assisting junior faculty members, Dr. Amouzegar will seek external funding from a variety of sources, oversee the
joint Ph.D. program and also the grant and contract processes in the college.
Dean Mahoney also appointed Electrical Engineering Professor Anastasios Chassiakos
as the Executive Director for Assessment for the College of Engineering.
Among other duties, Dr. Chassiakos will oversee the college’s preparation for
its major Fall 2007 ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology,
http://www.abet.org) review. Finally, Dean Mahoney has appointed
Dr. Sandra Cynar as the Special Assistant for Instruction in the college.
Dr. Cynar will oversee the recruitment, retention, advising and instructional
duties for the college. All three of these appointments became effective
before the start of the Fall 2005 semester.
