Dr. Cynar Named Acting
Associate Dean for Instruction
On August 11, 2004 College of Engineering
Dean Michael Mahoney announced the one-year appointment of CSULB
Computer Engineering and Computer Science Professor Sandra Cynar
as Acting Associate Dean for Instruction. Dean Mahoney said
"Dr. Cynar has been associated with this college for more than
40 years as a student, lecturer, professor and department chair.
She in strongly devoted to the welfare of the college and will
do everything she can to help us progress this upcoming year."
Dr. Sandra Cynar has
a tremendous overall record of service and excellence. She earned
her BS and MS degrees in Electrical Engineering at CSULB, and
earned her Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering at UC Irvine. She won
the campuswide Distinguished Teaching Award and the collegewide
TRW (now Northrop Grumman) Teaching Award in 1992. She chaired
the CECS department for nine years during a period of great expansion
and hiring and she regularly ran a budget surplus. She created
and has run the Center for Electronic Design Automation (CEDA)
associated with Cadence Design Systems over the past 3-4 years.
Dr. Cynar's leadership has helped us get millions of dollars in
donations of servers, software, scholarships and internships from
Cadence and related companies. Our CECS and EE departments now
use Cadence tools in several of their required classes.
Acting Associate Dean Cynar's major duties will include overseeing
the Admissions and Advising Center and working with people across
campus on issues of recruitment, advising and retention. Dr. Cynar
will also chair the College Curriculum Committee. She led the
effort to create four new programs (one BS, two minors, one certificate)
in 2003-04. She will also work together with Associate Dean Chassiakos,
the chairs and others on ABET issues.
Dr. Cynar's acting appointment will begin on August 23, 2004,
the first day of the Fall 2004 semester. She will be a half-time
Acting Associate Dean. A search for a permanent Associate
Dean for Instruction will be conducted during the 2004-05 academic
year.
